I was wondering how many anandtechers are prior or active military.

Provided there weren't any witnesses around that would be willing to testify, I wouldnt bet against it.

Ha ha. No, I hope not... :)

But then again, you never know. The baddest guy I've ever met while being in the army was a tough-as-nails Navy dmolitions chief who was my Stick sergeant at Airborne school...

In our stick, we had infantry guys, officers including a full-bird colonel, guys on their way to Ranger school, etc. and *none* of them even thought about sending an ill word his way.

Damn that Chief was mean...

Since so many of you have been in so long, any of you have any tricks of the trade that you wish you knew when you first got in?

Glenn1, if that DMZ sign was in VN you must have been wandering around QuangTri Province. Ahhh, home sweet home. What a rathole!

Although I have not served in military, I would like to personally thank all of those that have made this nation the greatest country in the world to live in.

1. Be where you are supposed to be at the proper time, in the proper uniform, prepared to work or train; and everything else falls into place.

2. Don't buy a car from any of the dealers in the off-post vicinity.

3. Contribute to the GI Bill and budget your pay accordingly. The GI Bill deduction runs through the first 12 months of service.

4. Save for the day when you get out. Train for it as well.

And dont go cheap, get the maximum benefit, it will pay big dividends when you need it.
Same for life insurance, get the max you can buy, especially if you are married. If something unforeseen happens you will want your loved ones well taken care of. The insurance is a hell of a lot cheaper than you can get outside, especially if you are an older soldier.

SEAL Team Two - 9 years

I'm not sure anyone's still interested but here's a platoon picture with my buddy Neil Roberts; the same Neil Roberts that was executed by the Taliban a couple of days ago. I'm not sure why they are still showing his high school picture online and in newspapers but I'd rather remember him like this. He's in the middle of the front row wearing the floppy hat, and that's me on the far left, front row.

The guy was ALL warrior. It seems to be a cliche any more to say "He'd give you the shirt off his back" but that's exactly the kind of guy Fifi* was; never an unkind word, solid, dependable.

We're all going to miss him.

Steve

* He was given the name "Fifi" after our Lieutenant decided that with his short curly hair he looked like a poodle - being a new guy, that was the name he was given and it never bothered him; he thought it was pretty cool. :)

Steve- I'm still interested. I am sorry for the loss of your friend. Rest assured he died fighting for something he believed in and it was not in vain. Thank you for your service and again you have my condolences.

It's actually the DMZ between Iraq and Kuwait, on the Al-Basrah Highway, A.K.A. "the highway of death." Some things never change, anywhere you can find a DMZ, you can pretty much rest assured the country you're in is a rathole.
