I was this close to buying my attainable dream car today

Try a Z4 M... I test drove one and it was pretty fun with all the torque, though the interior was cramped. I can't imagine an S2000 being that fun in everyday driving, with all the reving you have to do to get the 240hp.

So basically you didn't buy the S2000 because you were scared of it.

That's WHY you buy an S2000!

It's true that they are poor daily drivers. They feel slow in traffic, they are noisy, and they are snug. But there are very few cars at any price point that can keep up with a sorted S2000 on a twisty road or a medium-speed track. At Buttonwillow, the S2000 is the street-class time-attack record holder. Piloted by an amateur driver, with a stock engine, A/C, and a stereo, it's only 13 seconds off the pace of the pro-driver, unlimited race class record.

Few cars so effectively force you to learn to drive. I'm still learning, one hot lap at a time. 🙂

I've long been a fan of the S2000 and it was my realistic dream car ever since seeing the concept in Chicago in 1999...until I drove one. I was pretty dismayed with its [lack of] functionality and cramped feeling. It was scarey just driving in traffic. It was a pristine, used vehicle from a dealer and in perfectly working order. However, myself and my girlfriend just couldn't get over how snug it was; too snug. So I decided against it.

To this day, I probably still wouldn't buy one for daily driving and weekend warrior. If I were to get one, it'd be my track-only car - when I have plenty of money to throw away on a track-only, project vehicle. Even then, I'd be looking at other options in all honesty.

Reality hit hard the day I test drove one. :S

If it didn't click for you and make you want to own it on a test drive then your 'dream car' is probably something different.

Scary in traffic? That may be taking a bit far…

Definitely cramped though. My Passat feels cavernous by comparison. If I had to DD mine, I'd go a bit nuts.

It's been a few years...I just remember it feeling very awkward and uncomfortable compared to my Civic Si at the time. It may be a different story now. /shrug

Maybe he means scary in that it is so small compared to every other car. I know when I first got my miata I was always noticing how huge even little cars looks when I pulled up by them, even worse now that my miata is lowered. The small interior size never bothered me DD mine.

Nah, small cars don't bother me. I prefer them. My RSX is lowered and pretty small compared to most vehicles. The problem with the S2000 when I drove it was the combination of cramped interior, narrow and limited visibility, and nothing but hood. I'm too used to vehicles' hoods sloping out of line of sight from the interior and the S2000's seems to go on for days. I know that's a common design layout for several small coupes, and I guess I'm just not used to it. Or it's not for me.

I may take one for a ride again soon and see how I feel now. In all honesty though, I'll never get rid of my RSX. It's my perfect car. ^^

I love those too. I wouldn't mind an 05-06 Type-S myself...

Best decision of my life. Good luck though. I had fun trying to find mine, and I'm positive they're only becoming more coveted and rare now. I mean, it's been 7 years now.
