I was thinking about fs/ft... why do we bump threads?

Lets say i have a listing to sell something and you want to buy it. It is common practice to bump the seller's thread, but why would you do so if it means more competition for you? The same situation goes for a wtb thread, and if you have something they want. Why would you go with common practice and bump their thread, only to have them get more and possibly better offers? Isnt bumping people's threads that you coudl potentially do buisness with just begging for competition?

Bumping a FS thread when messaging the OP is kinda like staking your claim. The seller usually will sell to the first person that replied to the thread and sent them a PM as long as they are comfortable with the persons references, payment method, etc...

And you won't get in a bidding war here because "Auction style" transactions are not allowed

The reason i made this thread was because in the middle of discussing a deal, the other person said that they had an offer for a better trade. it just got me thinking. I know auction style stuff isnt allowed, but most people here will drop an offer in favor of a more profitable one.

edit: Your point about staking a claim makes sense in an ideal world, but stuff like above happens.

FS/T is an incredibly fast-moving forum. it is not abnormal for threads to be bumped to ensure that they are not forgotten. i can tell you that without bumping my thread, nobody would have read it -- and my AT forum settings are that i prefer to view 500 posts/threads per page. despite this setting, my WTB threads have often fallen to the second or even the third page on the same day that i last posted.

as Flash1969 said, it's also about staking your claim. if you get the first post in, you're generally the one who will end up buying the item. i hardly see the competition you refer to being done. FS/T is not an auction forum, and it's prohibited to post "oh, wait, i want this item and i will be willing to pay $5 more for it!" this is why you need to explicitly provide the prices you are willing to pay FIRST, so that you are making it known that you are entirely comfortable selling at that amount. it would be very unethical after someone posts in that thread to PM the OP and say that you want the item for more money, and you, as the OP, agree to that price.

edit: your point is valid, but again, it's unethical. i wouldn't buy from a seller who had a history of duping his buyers because someone chose to pay more. in fact, i think such activities would cause consequences to the seller on AT if he chose to violate forum policy and go with the second offer.

without bumping in FS/FT, your post (whether FS/WTB/WTT) might not be seen

It pays to be a good netizen in the FS/FT forum. Bumping other traders threads, especially those traders you are familiar with, fosters good will and reciprical treatment.

BTW, the FS/FT rules prohibit "auction" style selling.

I have to disagree with you a little here. I don't give dibs or rights to my product based on PMs or posts in my thread. As with most people here, if someone offers to buy your product, chances are it is NOT at your asking price. Thus if someone offers me lower than asking, and in the process of swapping PMs with that person another one offers my full asking price I damn well reserve the right to get my full asking price. Now if I'm discussing shipping addresses and the sale is all but done, I by no means will back out of the original sale. But if the original buyer and I are still swapping the first couple PM's discussing details and I get an offer for my full asking price, I will tell that buyer and ask them what they want to do about it. I will never attempt to "bid up" beyond my original asking price, but I don't see what is wrong with continuing to accept offers up to my asking price if the sale is not finalized.

EDIT In a similar situation, I was recently purchasing a video card. I found a good deal and had committed to the purchase, but there was about a week where I was waiting for him to be able to ship the product. In that time period, I found another deal that was better. I wanted to jump on it, but didn't.

Exactly. If I were to offer below asking, I have no expectations. however, if I PM someone with the full asking price and let them know with a bump in the thread, and they sell to another who PM's them an hour later, I chalk that up to bad practices and put them on my DNT list.

What? It's true.

They see a GF-MX for sale and they have or had one they liked at one time and boom, bump. :p

Very weird.

Well dug777, if I decide to start trading again I will break my usual rule of not selling/trading to people in countries outside of the USA but only for you.

I stopped trying to sell stuff on the FS/T forum when I was offered $20US for an item by a German punk who was quite sincere when telling me that shipping would only come to $18 for said item and that his offer included shipping.

To quote a wise man... I can get nothing for doing nothing.

But I have a stockpile of gear so I will be trying AT again first and then ebay if I get more offers like that other one. ;)

Search doesn't work all that great, and most people (myself included) usually just read the first few pages unless they're really bored. Its also tradition I guess.

I bumped a thread once because the video card for sale had a purple PCB. I'd never seen a purple one and I thought it looked pretty cool...it seemed like the thing to do.
