Well, for starters, that's an external USB3 cable, intended for connection to a laptop. If you want a cable so the drive is at the other end of your desk or table from your laptop's position, buy another USB3 cable that's 18" or even 36" long. Offhand, I'd budget $5 for such an item, but you can check the resellers. There's "Cables to Go" or C2G, the Egg, and several other online resellers.

Personally, with a cable that short, I might begin to imagine using some Velcro to attach the drive to the laptop, and following the hinged display -- remain permanently connected.

But -- whatever peels your banana and floats your boat.

Yeah, USB3 cables for USB drives have always been short. The shorter the better IMO.

Got same cable with my magnetic Adata from 2013, don't understand it either but it has been always this way.

There comes a point like this one where it's too short especially for its thickness. A good way to reduce at least a mechanical USB drive's lifespan is to run it off-axis dangling from a computer ready to also get knocked around. I think 1.5' (.5m for you Eurotechs) is just about right.

0.5m=50cm=19.7" 1.5"=3.8cm= ~0.04m
If you live in america, they still use metric units very much everywhere outside consumer sector. Scientific research, engineering and military all use metric units by default.

I was only offering the conversion to be convenient.

From experience at work, USB 3 is kind of janky. Each convertor and extender of cable length has a potential negative impact on reliability. They may have found the same thing and then horribly overcompensated.

Oh lol you meant 1.5 ft, I thought that they do write ' only when it is followed by inches '' number. On the cables they print everywhere ft instead of ' so that was a confusion.

Cable length is fine if you use it to connect to a laptop, and not behind a computer case.
