...not by a con-artist, but by an employer. I needed some extra cash this summer for food (while I work on my book) so I took a job receiving calls from PBS viewers during their pledge drive next month. I went into the interview Monday (and had to do some training while there) and wasn't officially hired until today. I had signed up for training tonight when I was there on Monday (wouldn't be officially hired until I called back today to confirm) and was told that I should get paid as it is mandatory training. I went to the training under that impression and at the end, after learning how they count hours and subsequently asking about today's training, was told that I wouldn't be paid for the training. I would also have to attend a mandatory two-hour session next week, where I wouldn't be paid but would receive pizza . Under Michigan law, training must be paid; needless to say, I am quite peeved and will be contacting the Labor Dept. tomorrow morning. The thing that upsets me most is that I spent 1.5 hours there Monday and one hour today, plus time getting ready, where I could have been writing.
