By perhaps the dumbest thieves ever.

Forgot to lock my car last night. Remembered about it just before bed, didn't bother to go out and lock it because it's not the kind of neighborhood where that it usually an issue. Went out this morning and the interior of the car had been ransacked, everything strewn about. Among the items touched or moved and NOT taken

Good stereo head unit worth a few hundred.
Good radar detector worth about two hundred.
Very good Craftsman socket set
Good set of box wrenches
Very good Leatherman multi-tool
Good binoculars
Set of golf clubs
MP3 player
Cheap digital camera
Basketball, football, baseball glove, couple of Frisbees
About 10 Subway $5 gift cards (Aunt works at Subway, so I get them free)

I keep a couple of twenties and a roll of quarters in the ashtray for emergencies, so that's $50 in cash that could be pocketed in seconds. I usually keep a few Harbor Freight 20% coupons in there too because HF is nearby and I stop there often. The ashtray was opened, but the thieves must have seen only the coupons and not noticed the cash under them.

Items taken

20 year old Prince tennis racket worth $10 tops. Okay, maybe $11, it had a new grip.
1 can of tennis balls with only 2 balls in it.

Nothing else missing. There's a grammar school 2 blocks over, bet if I drive by there a few times in the next week I see some kid whacking balls against the wall with my racket.

I dunno if "deserve", but man... that's a lot of crap in your car.

Tools are things I sometimes use on the car, sometimes in work, so they have to be left in the car. There's never a week where I don't play some sport, so the sporting goods get constant use. Radar detector doesn't do much good on my desk, neither does the stereo. All the sporting goods are the trunk, a few things like the detector and the Leatherman in the glove box, the Subway cards, camera and MP3 player in the center console. When you walk by the car and peek in the window it looks almost empty. About the only item visible would have been the stereo.

Sounds like the person(s) who did this are probably not regular thieves. Probably some kid who doesn't have a need or use for any of the more expensive items like the tools, radio, etc. Radar though...that could be pawned off or sold on craigslist pretty much scott free, unless you had the serial numbers written down somewhere.

Or he was just looking for your car keys. Some people are actually dumb enough to leave them in the glovebox or visor.

Possible. Both visors were down and I'm sure they were up.

Still hard to explain the choice of what was stolen. If I was trying to boost a car and couldn't I wouldn't take something almost worthless instead. I'd either take the electronics or take nothing and move on to a different car with better pickings. But swiping a tennis racket? That's just weird.

Something similar happened to me, but all there was in the car was insurance/registration packet in the glove box, along with an old Rolling Stones CD.

The insurance/registration packet and contents were spread around on the front seats, and the Stones CD was gone.

Wasn't one of my favorite CDs, hence it was in the glove box, instead of the factory installed, buried in the dashboard, CD changer.

3 other cars nearby that weren't locked were rifled through as well. The cars that were locked, were untouched.

Sounds like some teens were looking for a bedroom for a few hours. Any beer cans left in the car?

You're car would of been gone by the time you got in your house if it was my neighbourhood.

I haven't been in the habit of locking my older cars when I drive them to work. There isn't a lot of space in the Miata, so I was keeping my daily multivitamin in a small prescription bottle in the center console. A couple months ago, I went to lunch, and noticed it was missing. I hope someone took them all and was sorely disappointed :p
