Around 9PM-2PM while I was playing Forgotten I hope. Then chating with my friend about Trillian, then open FlashFXP to get some game updates. POOF! Backround changes, everything goes to complete hell. How this happen is beyond me, I still need to get real retail virus scanner. I found something called helpctrl.exe and it doesn't seem to do anything at all and for some strange reason is in my startup. I am guess most people are going to recommend I reformat? How would I reformat my MBR also? I also want to grab a couple of files off of it if possible. The only retail virus scanner I have is PcCillin.. :|

What the hell? Note, this is a 2mb *.bmp

Thanks, but right now Instead of Replying to a Message - Microsoft Internet Explorer its something entirely different.

Huh? 😕

Uhh, you can't do a low level format without access to a manufacturer's refurbishing utilities. Low-level formatting is REALLY low-level. Using a filesystem format IS a high-level format.

Delete the partitions and zero the MBR with a utility (Usually the manufacturer has one).

Or a complete low-level reformat
I was assuming that that wasn't what you wanted to do, But it would be your best bet. Although I feel a low-level format would be a little overkill though. Running fixmbr and then a regular reformat should suffice well.

I would write zeroes to the drive, in case any funky MBR action took place.

I do that if I suspect something of happening that could have malicious intent. As a result I second this idea.

Yea, i know when a system has a virus or not, my old systems used to always get virus' and now thats pretty much solved now i run a variety of firewalls and i don;t run any anti-virus. Because there's no need for me to since i haven't gotten a virus in over 2years. They were a waste of money for me the last few years.

Oh yea, helpctrl.exe runs on my computer too. My guess is it's not a virus don;t worry about it. I would do a write 0's and re-install Win. A Fresh install always runs better anyway.

Windows does do some messed up things 😀 Maybe u can hook us up with some pics of what happened? BTW i use IE6 i find nothing wrong with IE. Stupid web browser nazi's 😀, i kno this kid at school who's always like "ack IE, this sucks" and the kid is rele weird.

Read the top please, I dont want this to happen to any of my parents computers.. Anyone know anything about setting up a a smoothwall??
