At my favorite store they have just for the 1.6 durons in and i was thinking about getting one to play with. I hear that they are great ocers and at the price they are i figured lets give it a try. THis is not to replace my 3200 barton or anything but rather as a try. THis is the stepping that they have posted:

AMD DURON APPLEBRED 1.6GHZ MIUHB0338SPMW

IS this a decent one or should i wait for others? Also what about the cache enabling and overclocking of these chips? IS that true? Anything that i should know before i give this a try(or prehaps wait)?

the price difference between the durons and say a 1700+ or 1800+ isn't that big
personally i rather have a better cpu for the little more
duron is basically the cheapest modern cpu you can buy but if your serious about any of the follow: gaming, overclocking, demanding applications, etc
I would then consider something with more cache for a few more bucks

but if all else fails the .13 durons should overclock well and are basically the cheapest

as far as enabling extra cache on these durons i wouldn't count on it

good luck

I agree....they are very little uses I think that a Duron is even worth it...Why get such a neutered cached chip??? Like soulkeeper said the money difference is about neglible since the prices are on the floor at this point....

I also agree I don't think you can enable the cache or chance they migh be rejects of xp chips that cache was defective...

Im not buying it to use, rather just to fool around with is all. I wanna see how hard i can push one. Cause really if it dies im out a few bucks and who really cares right? I just want to get a decent Stepping to increase the chances is if I can. Its also very hard to find a decent 1700 and such in canada

well since your doing it for fun then i understand hahaha, i would recommend just getting the lastest week you can
the newer the cpu you buy the better chances of getting a better stepping
intel and amd are always refining and bettering their processes

i doubt there will be any one stepping that will give you more than 50mhz consistently over other steppings of durons on .13u
so it shouldn't matter too much

good luck, let us know how it oc's when you get it too

And to follow that logic I would say definitely buy from the likes of newegg or some other high volume dealer as they always seem to run through older stock so fast you get newer chips more frequently....

A store that may not do high volume got is from a distributor that has had these tihngs for awhile and probably wont get a newer stepping.....

most important is that "B" for the 5th digit, rather than an "A". tbred b core, thats good.

Cheapest perhaps. Crummiest performance still goes to the celeron though, don't you think? :p

The Celeron-T was a good chip. P4 Celerons utterly suck though, I agree. :D
