I was just about one foot from being rear-ended by a Ford Expedition doing about 40mph. I was turning left onto the street that I live on and doing about 50 mph. I put on my turn signal and slowed down to about 20mph and shifted from 4th to 2nd gear but hadn't lifted my foot off the clutch yet. I look in my rearview mirror and this Expedition behind me is coming at me full speed. If I'd continued to slow down I'd have been rear-ended for sure. I took my foot off the clutch and floored it. By then the Expedition had started slowing down. It's kind of hard to describe but basically, when flooring it, I outran the Expedition until it could slow down enough. It came literrally about a foot away from hitting me at the closest point. My old car died the last week of last year and never would have been able to recover like that. It also didn't have airbags or crumple zones. I'm so glad it's gone now and that I didn't get hit.
Whew!
