Just got back from Future Shop. (few min walk from work).

Looked over many phones including the HTC One X, S3, Iphone 5, Note, etc.

I was rather disappointed. I took out my trust Galaxy Nexus and played with each phone above for 5-10 minutes. Nothing was any faster than my Nexus. I much prefer the Stock Jelly Bean over all the UI's as well.

The only phone I thought might be worthy upgrade is the Sony Xperia S.

I really like that phone, but am not sold on it yet. I really want the camera, and the screen is absolutely beautiful.

It is also 32GB (Welcome over 16GB).

I think I would have gone for it if It had the S4/225 in it. Is the S3 1.5 / Adreno 220 a step above the Galaxy Nexus? Or about equal?

Around the same ballpark really. If you're not getting the Krait (S4) or at least a quad then there's really not that much improvement.

... I'm very confused why you went in thinking any of those phones with the poorly optimized launchers and shoddy company roms would be faster than a clean Nexus.

Well, to be honest I didn't know what to expect. I guess I was just feeling the upgrade itch.

Is the camera in the Sony Xperia S worth upgrading for? (For somebody who uses the cam a lot?)

Xperia S launched with Gingerbread and got the ICS update this summer. I wouldn't be surprised if it's pretty much done in the way of updates.

Right now I think the only thing I'd remotely consider replacing my Galaxy Nexus with is a Galaxy SIII or HTC One X+ (which isn't on my carrier, so not really possible for me anyway).

However hopefully a new Nexus phone isn't too far off. Some people think before the end of the year, I'm kinda thinking January or February. Either way my Galaxy Nexus is still doing pretty good compared to most phones thanks to being stock Android and having 4.1.

Thanks for the info.

I'm just going to hold off for the new Nexus later on. Sorry about the thread.

One thing I will say is the HTC One X color reproduction made my screen look last gen for sure. (Especially White)

Thanks!

If you're getting bored with your Nexus, start messing around with lots and lots of ROMs. Currently, I'm running MIUI just to try it out. I loved it on my Fascinate, and it works great on the Nexus.

Might switch back to Snap(Black).

You'll be glad you have the Nexus when 4.2 drops. You get to use all the Goog-announced features right away, while everyone else waits... and waits...

But if y'all are expecting the next Nexus to be the new bleeding edge LG, when's the last time that happened? Right. Don't hold your breath.

The only thing I want from 4.1 is the smoother UI and the multichannel audio. I have no use for anything else. Google Now? Meh. I'm not willing to give up my TW UX for one feature (Project Butter doesn't work correctly without a hwcomposer made for the GSII).

Why? The Exynos is already faster than OMAP. Furthermore, this is a quad core 1.5ghz. So even though it's not next gen, it should be significantly faster. Look at SGS2 vs SGS3 benchmarks.

With that said, software is still more important.

I think you misread the OP and the first reply. The Snapdragon S3 and OMAP4460 in the Nexus are pretty equal, and both old dual cores. None of the phones the OP was looking are Exynos powered. The One X and SGS3 are both S4 powered, and technically outspec the GNex though.

Should be noted, if you want to polished working custom roms, then the word is to avoid Exynos powered devices.

Now, here's my opinion. Now isn't a good time to buy for Android. We're coming into the fall holiday season, which sees the big manufacturers launch their new super phones. And usually sees Google drop a new version of Android with corresponding Nexii. I'd hold off until the launches and PR are out of the way before dropping any money. This is my path.

I upgraded to the SG 3 but still have my Nexus, am considering returning the SG 3 to await the new Nexus. I gotta say though that the battery life on the SG 3 is a lot better than my Gnex.

you really have an itch to upgrade your nexus after less than a year of it being out?

You must be new to this forum. More than a few people here seem to upgrade smartphones every few months.

Personally I don't see the need for a new phone to replace my GNex any time soon. I don't do anything on my phone that would take advantage of more advanced CPUs or GPUs.

Exactly. I went from SIIX to Note and now the Note2 is coming out, I'm trying to justify upgrading again! I get discounts from the company though, but it's still a lot of money to spend just to have the latest phone.

Most important thing I want upgraded at this point is the camera! The Note has a really nice camera just like the S2 and S3 but the problem is the lag! If the Note2 ships with JB and a lag-free camera, I'll probably be sold.

Note 2 allegedly uses the exact same camera as the Galaxy S3 so it should be lag free.

Thanks for the thread, it pointed me in the right direction. I've had my HD2 since March 2010 and grew impatient waiting for the next gen to finally drop.
I bought a used nexus within an hour of having my eyes opened by this thread. It will hold me over until SGS4 launches and even if the next Nexus turns out to be a must have, at this price I don't mind eating minor fraction of the cost to sell it and partially recover the cost of the next Nexus.
