I WAS considering the Apple 30" HD, but not anymore...

I was thinking about getting the 30", but found really bad reviews (and the cost was too high). Could someone suggest a 21"+ moniter that would work well?

Thanks!

I know that the 30" REQUIRES at least a 6800 Ultra to be used on a Powermac G5. I had the chance of messing around with it for a few hours and I must say it is an experience. It's clean, crisp, hi-def and THIRTY INCHES. If you have the money and *really* don't need it... treat yourself for sure.

I keep hearing that the response time is just too slow for gaming and that there is alot of ghosting when using it. These same people bought it, then returned it and got a 23" HP because the specs where much better. I don't know for sure as I am in the 20.1" - 23" market so that is a bit over my price range

Is there a better 30" LCD out on the market?

Thanks!

in short, you cant use it. unless you get either:
a) a powermac G5 with a 6800 Ultra
b) a new Nvida Quadro card, over $1000

the 30" has so many pixels it needs Dual Link DVI which is only found on those cards.

according to Apple, it THEORETICALLY can run on a PC, but they don't support that. Also, PC Magazine said it had some significant problems. So, no 30" for me.... Spike, you said you know 21" to 23" LCDs well, what would you suggest...

ASUS 6800GT Gamer Edition supposedly had Dual Link DVI as well but I don't know if you can buy it anymore.

well, I don't know them "well" but I am sorta in the market so I have been looking. For a 23" the best "bang for the buck" seems to be the HP L2335 (~$1200) as it has good specs (I believe it's 16ms rise/fall). For the 20.1" category I am looking at the Dell's as they are cheap and Dell has a no-nonsense return policy. Can't decide between the widescreen or 4:3 panel yet...

I know this is not much help, but in reality I am just "looking" right now as my wife has not approved the funds yet. If a great deal came up on the HP or the Dell screens I would probably jump on them, but other than that I am kinda on the prowl.

Do a search here and on google for info/reviews on these and other panels. There are plenty of users who have them and play lots of games so they would be much more informative than myself.

I've been searching and reviewing alot of stuff myself Spike. I'd been considering the Dell as well, but after seeing a 22" LCD flatscreen... hard to resist getting something a little bigger.

There was a huge thread about running it on a PC just yesterday.

Search's your friend.

Apple claims to be able to deliver their special 6800 Ultra AGP with dual-link DVI. I'd say you can use that in a PC. It's $600 on top of the $3000 for the display, though.

It's easy to resist when you don't have the $$ 😉

I do know the feeling, with all the hype about the HP 23" and the new Dell 23" around the corner, looking at a 20.1" seems... well... weak. One of the excuses I am using for looking at the 23" is that I currently run a 21" CRT that has a 20" viewable area, so a 20.1" LCD is not much of a size upgrade. So far the wife is not buying it... grrrr...

K, despite a number of slightly contradictory reviews, I think I have it boiled down to the Apple 23" HD ($1599, plus tax after educational discout). the Sony SDM-P234/B 23" widescreen ($1,614.99 including shipping from NewEgg), the HP L2335 23" widescreen ($1599.00 + shipping and tax), the HP Pavilion f2304 23" HD Widescreen ($2,099.99). Anyone have hands on experience with any of these? (Maybe I should make a new thread for this).

Same deal for me with the 23" Apple. It seemed the most realistic of the bunch. (as far as the Apple monitors)

mac video cards and pc video cards are totally different. they are NOT cross compatable.

I have seen the HP L2335 on sale for $1250, so I would hold out on another deal for that one. The thing you have to look for is the actual panel manufactorer. Alot of LCD panels are made by only a few companies so thats when you look for the company that has the cheapest LCD using the same panel as a more expensive one.

The HP f2304 is nice if you want compent input. The L2335 is a nice, clean bezel.

I haven't used the 2335, but I do get to use the f2304 almost daily, and it is a beautiful screen.

The 2335 can be had for about $1500.

Since you were looking at the 30"

Buy TWO. 😀

i want a 23" apple too, but i heard about a pink tint problem. have they fixed this yet?

I'm using the HP L2335 here - simply beautiful!

Heightwise, it's the same as my old 21" CRT (20" viewable), but it's a LOT wider - much more screen real-estate. It is 16ms combined fise/fall, and so is much better for gaming than a 25ms panel would be. Very glad I got it (or rather than I persuaded my work for get it for me 🙂
