I was an Engineer, now I'm a janitor

So about a year ago I switched from Engineering to IT within my company. Overall, I'd say it was a good move for me, with a few exceptions...

Shortly after I switched, they fired the "phone" guy, who's only job was to work on the phone system, and gave the responsibility to us at the Helpdesk. Immediately the number of "TELCO" Helpdesk cases shot up, and our stats showed that I was doing more manual labor phone work than IT :(

Then recently, they decided to route all building issues to the Helpdesk. We just got this email:

I hope I reached the correct dept.

Ladies restroom 2nd floor west end-2nd stall- needs cleaning- I found the mess when I opened the door & put a sign on the door- not to use this stall.

Is it possible, since I am on the subject of restroom ? to have a box of paper potty seats placed on the vanity top-

Thanks,
xxx

Somehow, I sense the prestige of my Engineering days slipping away...

Small or shrinking business? I too am a small company in which the IT department manages to get a lot of building-maintenance issues, although most of the time it just means calling the building manager and getting it fixed.

Don't worry. Youre still an engineer.
You're a sanitation engineer.

yep know the feeling worked for a UK bank in engineering dept ( building aircon and mainframe power supplies )
kept the system running with both power suplies out ( standby gennys ) down time cost 40 million evey 5 mins, next pay review came round " no pay rise this time ) , you did not put down salt/grit on icy entrance floor ( this was at the same time as the major system failure ) .

Thank goodness they make you redundant if a. you are 50 and b. you have 25 years service ,

now I dont care, six fig payout a pension and all the time to play golf and surf the web

now you get to have the title "Custodial Engineer," so don't worry, you're doing what you went to school for :)

I've become the support-line dude during the day at my IT job... they are still paying me the same amount of money as before, so I'm happy. We don't get too many calls! ;)

Congratulations. Oh, you were complaining? In our building the janitors are some of the best paid guys around, also some of the nicest & smartest.

What did you expect when you switched to IT?

Actually, my IT pay raises have been far more satisfying than my Engineering pay raises :) so it has its trade-offs.

Hey, look at the bright side, at least you are still gainfully employed.
