ok so i finally got my dad to see the light........that old PIII 650mhz and its pc100 ram is sloth like in speed and the HDD is about to give up the ghost, so hes buying a new rig.......my friend since completely re-doing his rig into a A64 monster has a spare rig left over which he was using as a server and is now selling...to me and my dad

it reads as so

P4 2.4ghz 400FSB
768Mb RD Ram 800mhz
80gig WD HDD
Audigy sound card
Geforce 3 ti200 64mb passively cooled
2x120mm vantec stealth fans
thermaltakes thermo-electric cooling
DVD and CD-RW
400watt psu
Gigabyte P4 titan

thats about it, now this will be used primarly as a multi media computer, my dad will be using it for email, and music, web browsing and stuff for his PALM zire 71, so i figure this will run all the above super smooth, my brother will also be a user and enjoys the odd game of generals and UT2003.2004, tho he doesnt really care about how good it looks so long as he can kill ppl

so this rig is gonna cost £350 which in dollars maybe alot for that rig, but im in the uk and i think that is a great machine for the price

will it suffice for general multimedia use and the occasional game......i do have a 9500pro in my rig which i may swap out so that the p4 rig will be good for hard gaming too

this rig also has to last a while too, tho the GFX card will probably be replaced

what u think?

cpu is fine, although that mobo won't let you upgrade beyond that. Memory good, HDD good, sound good, and DVD. a little over 600 u.s. dollars makes it pricey here in the states. Wouldn't be a good buy here in America. I wouldn't pay more than 400 u.s. dollars for a system with those specs, primarily because most of the components are 2-3 years old.

xp2000
512 ram (DDR 266)
2x40gb WD's
on board sound
DVD RW CD RW
Radeon 9500pro
I think your fine with this one as it competes with the one above; beats the p4 in games, but the CPU isn't too powerful, but neither is the p4.

IMO, with a rig like this one, why would you waste you money on the P4 one.

i have seen this rig in action tho it had a 9700pro in it and it played generals and UT smooth as glass! and it wil certainly do for non-gaming functions anyway.........besides its surely a quantum leap from the P3 650mhz with 256mb Pc100 sd ram

oh by the way...........everything except ram and audigy is pretty much less than 1 year old....although the parts have been round a while.....he did have to buy a new mobo as the one dell used didnt fit in a standard ATX case, the P4 was bought last year as a small upgrade from a 1.8, and extra stick of 256 ram, HDD, PSU, CASE and the drives are all less than a year old

and of course the GF3 is pretty old

If you ever want to upgrade the ram do NOT go with RDRam. It is hella expensive compared to DDR.

Have you compared the price of that rig to a new Mobile Athlon XP one? If 350 "pounds"= 500 dollars, then you should be able to get a nice mobile xp setup that would annihilate the 2.4 intel.

Abit NF7-S $86
Mobile Barton 2400+ $77
Radeon 9800 SE (softmoddable) $152
1 GB PC3200 $180

IMO thats the minimum you need if you want a gaming rig that will last a while. You could probably transfer some of your old components like DVD drive over.

I have the same p4 system you described above. (almost, you have 256 more ram and i have a 2.0 rather than a 2.4ghz pro.) same vid card etc. I can run all games seemlessly (haven't tryed farcry yet). but i play generals heavly and play some UT2003/2004. It runs these games quite well. Considering i payed 2600 bucks (canadian) for this computer a few years ago i would go for it. great price!

Having lived in The Netherlands for a while, I understand the price schemes there and you are getting a good system for the price if you don't have to pay VAT. It is upgradeable to 2.8 GHz P4. If this system was running at 533FSB with RDRAM 1066, I would say but it right now before he changes his mind.

Talk him down a bit.

I have configured games on a PIII 1.2GHZ at 133 FSB with 512MB SDRAM. Even got FarCry to play on it. You just have to decide how much eye candy you want to turn off. I feel FarCry looks great, but it is also worth playing for the excellent story line and AI.

Good Luck.

theres jus one problem with that.......i still need a new case and PSU.....the old computer is micro atx and has a feable 90watt PSU!!!!!!

i think 350 is a good price tbh.....i tried making a rig for the same price on overclockers and im afraid i didnt come up with anything that could beat what im gettin, also if i built a rig that could beat it then it cost alot more

plus this rig is already built and ready to go...no faffing on, jus install XP, updates and drivers and its off!
