I want to work from home on Friday

We're allowed to all the time, but my boss and I aren't necessarilly on good terms right now.

Should I tell him ahead of time?

IE: "I need to work from home on Friday"

Or wait until Friday morning and just call in that I have to work from home?

I agree with the ahead of time, but you're topic says "I want," and what you plan to tell your boss is "I need."

If you're not on good terms with your boss right now, it might be in your best interest to make clear your definitions of "want" and "need."

Working at home can be financially good for the company, can be great for the employee, and wastes less of our natural resources.

That said, CNN had an article ~6 months back about how those who work form home on occasion are much less likely to ever be promoted. People get jealous and talk about you behind your back. The boss wants to see you and you aren't around. Etc. But, if you are already on bad terms with your boss, I guess you can already kiss any promotions goodbye.

The least you can do is to notify your boss ahead of time. If you are on bad terms, just not showing up can be very bad.

Waiting until Friday is the worst possible option, other than not phoning in at all or screwing his wife while you're on the phone.

Absolutely true for me. But there are enough benefits that it's more than worthwhile.

Tell him you plan on working in your underwear on Friday. "It can either be at home or in the office... you decide?" I'm sure he'll have no problem letting you work from home.
