I'm looking to use a laptop CD/DVD drive in a desktop internally.

I firstly need to know what the connector on the back of a laptop CD/DVD ROM is called.

After I figured that out I can at least try and see if there is any way to convert it to standard IDE or SATA so I can hook it up internally.

This is the drive I'd want to use in a desktop.

Does anyone know what kind of connection it is and if it can be converted?

I found what I was looking for its a 50pin to 40 pin adapter, they sell them on Ebay for $10 shipped.

That is done all the time in HTPC systems - there is a section here on HTPC, etc. where there might be more help if you need it. The adapters are quite common and there are special brackets to adapt them into a standard 5" bay which can get quite pricey.
