I want to tweak and speed up my 56k connection

Folks, I've read many times about programs that increase your internet speed (about 100 - 200%), by tweaking and optimizing values like ttl, mtu, window size, etc... because the defalult values in windows are not the best, but never tried it. I am not expert in this subject. What program do you suggest? (free, if possible...)

Merry Christmas and thanks in advance!

There is not too much you can do about gaining speed in Modem Connection.

Windows Default Setting is geared toward modem connection.

Here you can find info about Tweaking, it is intended for Cable Connection. However, you may find something useful for any connection.

SpeedGuide Generic Registry Patches

eplebnista, although you haven't noticed any speed up in you connection, this Intelli-dial-up states: <<Speed up your internet connection up to 5 times faster for FREE!>>. Wow! 500%!!! What a joke! 🙂

I've been searching today and the best I could find was this ISPEED, but it is shareware, not freeware. It seems very complete, but also very technical. I'll have to learn these TCP/IP protocols in order to tweak the settings by myself, but don't have time now...

Is there something... let's say... more automatic?

I tried quite a few of those type programs and that is the only one I could remember. It only adjusts a few entries in the registry and generally none of the programs I have tried have helped any IMO. Nevertheless, here is a link to the NetFast program page.

I found exactly what I was searching for! Easy and free. It is the Internet Connection Booster 2000. I've noticed that this program (like the others) is just a "preset apply". By applying these "optimal settings", your dial up connection will experience a better traffic. Actually, I noticed that, among the tested programs, only ISPEED really does some connection measurements and calculations in order to really optimize something (and it has, also, many presets to be applied, if you want).

Anyway, thank you. Happy new year for all of you!!!

Best site I've ever found for modem tweaking is the Navas modem FAQ. Has plenty of info on tweaking, but most of it you need to do manually. When I used it way back when I still couldn't get a fat pipe to my house, I bumped my average download speed on uncompressible files from about 4.3K to about 5.1K, and my average ping to the servers I was gaming on went from 350-380 ms to 260-300 ms. It takes a while to read and try everything suggested in the FAQ, but my experience, over several systems, modems, and ISPs, is that you can get a worthwhile performance increase if you'll take the time to go through every tweak on that page.

When I was on dial-up, I used an app called SHSmod to increase the UART speed. Dialing into Blue Light, I got a 63.2k connection every time. I couldn't tell you where to find it as I got the link from an AMD forum but try searching for it.
