I want to try to learn Linux, is there a linux that can be run above Windows`?

I would like to learn linux and find out if I like it or not. So are their any linux distros out there that have a easy Linux to learn. I have read that most recomend RedHat and Mandrake. But I want to do this as easy as possible, I want to run linux above my win98se, is this possible?

I have heard there are versions that run in a windows environment, but I have not personally tried any of them, (besides QNX, which is more of a unix-based OS) I would recommend using partition magic or other partitioning proggie and create a little spot for it, and run a dual-boot, its really much easier to do than it sounds.

I know that it is easy! But I would love to learn and test linux without rebooting each time I want to run it.

Using Linux on top of Windows doesn't sound good. One of Linux's great features is its stability. This could be easily ruined by a Windozer with the 98 sig.

Nah really win98se is not unstable at all, it gets unstable if you trow lot of crap on it. Like any OS!!

No really! First I want to test out linux, find out if it is worth all the hasle learning how to use it etc. And I'm not afraid for runing Linux on my win98se, as my setup only need reboot when required. NoReboots becose of crashes or buggy system 8)

There is a version of Mandrake Linux that lets u run linux from starting it from windows. It then reboots and starts up linux from a large, single linux file instead of a partition. Kind of like what was done with BeOS. This way you dont have to mess with partitions and if you wanted to delete linux, just delete that linux file.

There are several. Winlinux, Penut Linux, Mandrake 7.0 (not sure about newer), and Zipslack. Go to download.com and do a search, they have more. I am not sure how the performance is since I do not run Linux on top of DOS (thats what these linux's do, they don't actually run in windows)

KD7FHD said it right ... winlinux... someone just showed it to me today and I can't wait to finish setting up my damn partitions and crap to be able to try the damn thing.. I'm gonna run a triple boot.. NT , 98 and Mandrake (or possibly redhat).. but yeah.. winlinux.. that's the one..

<edit> that might have been a bit confusing, but winlinux runs over windows.. you get an icon right on your desktop and it boots you into linux and then when you exit linux it goes back to windows.. </edit>
