I am pondering trying an interesting diet . . . no food. All calories from protien shakes, all vitamins from pill for 6/7 days of the week, and real food only on the 7th (mainly because I believe there are certain things your body needs that you can't get in pill form). Anyone know if there are any serious risks to doing this, and how many calories a day I should be targeting?

That is dangerous, be careful.

It is possible since some fast for a long time, living only off of water and juice.

If you are gonna do it, like Nebor said, consult a professional and gradually change your diet.

Try it. I won't kill you, certainly, and if it works then kudos. If it doesn't, try something else. And if you don't gorge on shakes it'll save you some money, too.

OR how about you try exercising regularly instead of depriving your body of what it needs to survive? Just a thought I mean.....

I did something very similar a couple times, a couple years back. I was trying to get to very low bodyfat levels. I was about 9% bf at about 215lbs, and I wanted to get to about 6 or 7%. For 21 days I drank a mixture of Met-RX Meal Replacement powder mixed 50:50 with Optimum Nutrition Protein powder. To this mixture I added a teaspoon of psyllium for fiber and a half teaspoon of flax oil for essential fats. About 2000 calories a day. After 21 agonizing days, my weight was down to about 205 pounds, however, according to a pinch test and the good old mirror, I lost mostly pure fat, as I had a very crisp line down the center of my abdominal region and my 4 pack became a crisp 6 pack. It's the leanest I've ever been. I want to point out that I was lifting heavy at the gym, and continue to do so. (been lifting consistantly for over 17 years now).

According to the various experimentation I've done over the years with protein, the best one-two punch for fat loss is the combination of protein and fiber. Without a significant amount of fiber, fat loss is not nearly as efficient. I normally get really lean for summer and then pack on the mass for winter, normally hovering around the 240 mark where I'm as strong as an ox at that bodyweight. Pretty radical diet. I don't recommend it. Better to throw in some solid meals.

I want to point out that if you try such a drastic diet with either too few calories or too much exercise, you will sacrafic muscle tissue. Once muscle tissue is sacraficed, metabolism is slowed down (about 1% per pound of muscle lost). Either take in adequate calories or reduce your workouts to 30 minutes. Trust me on this.

I have no intention of starving myself i.e. I'd still get the reccomended number of calories a day. I'm just curious how this would work

There's healthier ways to drop bodyfat than to do this.

Dude...

Eat a sensible diet. Moderate your intake of food eaten and eat healthy. Vitamin intake is important as well. Also, exercise is a must. The only way to keep off the fat and to get toned is to exercise. Start by doing a little running and gradually move onto other types of exercise.

Fad diets are just that... FADS! I guarantee you that within a week or two you'll lose patience and revert back to your normal eating routine.

:D

I highly suggest not crash dieting like that. I lost 50 pounds from NOT dieting... as in I used to do all those crazy diets, and after I threw in the towel and said F*%# it, I started losing weight.

Just eat in moderation, watch ur overal calories, and workout at least 5 days 30 minutes each session per week. Im my experience, it also didnt' matter what percentage of calories came from protein or any of that crap either.

Since 3500 calories are in a lb of fat, your total intake for the day depends on how much weigh tu want to lose. Just keep in mind that the body can't lose more than 2lbs of fat a week. ... well its really really difficutl to. So if you're really determined, aim for a deficit of 1000 calories a day.. which comes from exercising and eating less. How much do you weigh right now btw? And are u a male? female? It's all a calorie deficit game. Good luck.

It really isn't healthy to stop your intake of solid foods. You're not going to be doing your body much good and the weight you lose will be gained back the moment you come off this diet (or are you planning on eating protein shakes and vitamins your entire life?).

Exercise is teh win.
