I want to swap CPU's between these two Dell's, can you verify the possibility for me?

I may get this: http://www1.us.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/pedge_400sc?c=us&cs=04&l=en&s=bsd with a 2Ghz Celeron (400mhz FSB).

My buddy has this: http://www1.us.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/dimen_8300?c=us&cs=04&l=en&s=bsd with a 2.8Ghz P4 (800mhz FSB)

Can these two CPU's be swapped? He owes me some funds and I discussed the possibility of this, and he was cool with it, as long as it works. I'm pretty sure it would, as they use the i875 chipset, but I figure I'd get some verification here. Thanks guys!

As long as both the motherboards are 865/875 you will be safe on that front. However, I think there might be a large difference in the cooling for both of those processors. Last time I checked Dell uses adhesive to glue a heatsink to the processor but you should check.

I assume that the heatsinks wont be an issue since I have no reason to take the actual heatsink off either CPU's.

Am I missing something?

No, as I look back my post was a bit confusing. Keep in mind that this info was from an older Dimension with SDRAM. However as long as you both have the same case (then presuming that they both have the same fans for CPU ventilation) I would think you should be OK.

Hope this helps! 🙂

I hope your buddy owes u a lot of money (over $100?) cause he is gonna see a HUGE slowdown from a 2.8c P4 to a 2GHz celeron...

You ain't kidding! I'm guessing he might see as much as a 40-50% (granted, I'm not an expert, but it's gonna be significant) slowdown in CPU-intensive games. The friend may not use his pc that much, but he might rethink his decision after he plays around with the celeron for awhile.

Maybe he doesn't play games and just uses the machine to view online things and do typical application stuff. In which case he won't notice a thing.
