It is illegal for for profit companies to have volunteers work for them. Anandtech is one of many examples of this(with the moderators). This either practice either needs to be changed, or laws against it deemed unconstitutional There is a lawsuit against AOL right now concerning this subject, but I think it needs to be addressed on all accounts.

I and the other Moderators are tired of chasing you around and locking your Neffing threads
You have just earned yourself a weeks vacation

Heh, ummm, that is absurd. Just another example of how litigation happy this country has become.

Its the law. Companies breaking the law need to be addressed, instead of ignored.

It is against the law to willingly volunteer your time for free, if you agree to it? Damn I never knew that..

Well, doesn't this happen in schools? When I was a BIOSCI major, everyone told me I needed to volunteer for free somewhere to get a shot at med school. Grad students basically teach for free. Many other majors help you get internships where you get nothing except for skills. The only ones I would argue about are college students who have to work for free for a certain period to continue with their career and/or education. Volunteering for Anandtech is o.k. because no one is forcing you to, it is fun and you can leave whenever you want. I am not a volunteer but I don't see why any volunteer would have a problem.

Old news.

I believe there's a distinct difference between the Anandtech Moderators and AOL volunteers.

The point is, both AOL volunteers, and Anandtech volunteers are volunteers! According to the laws of our country, it is illegal to have volunteers work for a for profit company!

I think there's a difference though, the forums don't make money off of their services, they make money off of advertising.

AOL makes money off of the services that they provide, not soley the advertising.

Do the moderators add value to Anandtech? YES

They keep this place clean, which keeps me here, which increases ad impressions!

Go away.

(edit: he doesn?t get it. HE himself couldn?t sue, only the mods themselves could. And since I don?t see that happening any time soon, there is no problem - these mods have a bit more integrity than AOL ones. If you were able to sue then that means that the AOL members would be able to sue as well, which obviously is not the case.)

If it's illegal to have volunteers at a for-profit company, how do hospitals get away with candy-stripers and the like?

Since I'm volunteering to post here, does that mean I should get paid to?

Saxman, time to lay off the funny-tasting Kool-Aid. :p
