I want to sleep, but I can't, and I don't go to bed until 4am...

...and then I wake up at 8am in the morning all pissed off. What kinda problem is this? I heard an ad on the radio today about sleep apnea and I'd never even heard of this before, but it sounds like I might have some form of it. I always thought it was insomnia, but I'm not so sure anymore.

Here's how my typical night goes:

8-11pm: TV and/or read a mag if a new issue comes in and/or use my n/w mobile minutes or IM to chat with friends (often do a combination of all 3.)

11pm-1am: TV off (nothing good after 11.) Check emails one last time for the night, pay any bills if I need to (all online), check out AT forums and watch any bittorrent tv downloads that may have finished.

1am-3am: Get ready for bed (brush, change, check clothes for tomorrow). Think about going to sleep, get on ATOT instead. If ATOT is boring, head over to FARK. If nothing's good, check out an old pr0n TGP's daily pics (99% of which I've already seen.) Try for bed around 2am. Get back up. If the Intarweb is total suck, then sneak downstairs and check what's on digital cable with 300 channels (12 channels of HBO and IFC too!) By now my eyes are burning...

3am-4am: Finally get in bed. Wide awake. Go to the bathroom. Back in bed. Get up for a glass of water. Back in bed. Close my eyes and concentrate on shapes I see in the 'dark noise' in my head. Feel myself falling and snap back up, sitting straight up in bed. Take off the bedspread if I'm feeling hot, turn the pillow over, billow out the sheets so they're cool again, etc. Repeat until somehow I've fallen asleep.

Sometime between 8am and 9am: Wake up feeling like sh*t.

What should I do?

Insomnia. Benzodiazepines (Watch out iliopsoas, I used a big word) are commonly prescribed, though the long term effects can include dependence and rebound insomnia. Talk to your GP about it. He may recommend a psychiatrist as the problems underlying insomnia can be mental.

Be grateful that you can consistently wake up after only 4 hours of sleep? I know I can't do that.

Sleep apnea causes you to stop breathing once you are asleep, it doesnt cause you to play on the computer all night.

Yeah, I agree. But not right before you head off for bed. A few hours or more before.

good one. try doing some cardio when you wake up one morning. you'll sleep early that day, and do cardio again next morning. make this a habit. you'll sleep well.

or join Men with Testicular Cancer support groups, hug Bob's tits, and cry. You'll sleep well ;)

The usefullness of melatonin decreases as it gets later in the evening, so timing is important if you want the hypnotic effect of it. Melatonin has also not been shown to be useful in studies when given to insomniacs. If the OP is showing these symptoms of insomnia, it would be to his advantage to see his doc.

i have the same thing, i think its from using the comp and sitting in my as too much, try doing some exercise (i always feel like going for a run at 3am...lol) and maybe it'll get all your energy out of you so you can sleep better.

Sometimes i only get 3hours of sleep and feel fine! even thought i know i shouldn't feel perfectly fine, it catches up to you after awhile, i know ive slept friday 5pm- saturday 1pm because i only got 20hours of sleep for 5days. ( i had plans that friday too :( ) Try shutting down the computer a few hours before you goto bed and make sure you dont get back on, all your doing is wasting time. You'll get pretty tired if you just get bored late at night (no on on aim!- no fun.) and thats normally how i goto sleep on the early nights when im not up late writing term papers due tommorow from scratch.

you have to give yourself a while to relax and fall asleep. if you're thinking about stuff or "concentrating" on anything, you're not gonna fall asleep.

hah. benzos?
Name a benzo prescribed for insomnia.

What I would do if i were you would be this; in this order

1. see if changing up your nighttime schedule helps. maybe get a hobby? maybe do something more social?
2. maybe try exercising more
3. talk to your doc about some ambien, it is a great drug.

Exercise, avoid tv, monitors etc before bed, refresh rates and other
flashing things stimulate you and will keep you up. It's a matter
of responsibility, you have to make yourself get in bed at a certain time
and make it a habit. Exercise will give you energy during the day (after the first
week or two), keep you to a routine, but after you get past being exhausted from
it, it will still be up to you to make yourself go to bed on time. I'm certainly not saying
that you shouldn't exercise though, just that all in all it's up to you and probably has
nothing to do with any medical condition, especially sleep apneia.

OMG...I have the same f@#cking problem....it's 2:00 am in California and I am still wide awake. I usually don't go to sleep until 5 am. I have been thinking that I have a problem...but I don't know if I do or not. Even if I go to bed @ 2am I won't sleep unil 4-5am. I feel really shity when waking up at 8 am to go to school and work.

I dunno man... I'm simply convinced that I was not made to sleep to at night. Been that way my whole life. Luckily I've found a job that allows me to come into work as late as 10am. I can get to bed by 5am and still be ok. My friends are all the same way too. We'll try hard to get onto a decent sleeping schedule, but we always revert to being night hawks - without fail. No matter what.

Yeah, let's just perscribe drugs. Bullsh!t, just go to bed at a goddamn normal hour. The later you stay up, the harder it is going to be to fall asleep after a certain time, everybody knows that. You don't have insomnia, you just need to do something other that sit around all day and stay up till 4am browsing ATOT.
