I just want a two minute clip of audio from a DVD, are there any free services or packages that deal with this sort of thing? I found a few software packages or suites that do this, but I would rather not pay anything for a 2 minute clip for just this one occasion...

I found that site, but all of the solutions required software you need to purchase, and this is just a one time project, so I would rather not...

Put a tape recorder up to the speakers of your TV. Also, make sure everyone is really quiet while you're taping.

That's how they did it back in MY day! :|

There are LOTS of ways of doing this but frankly if all you want is a 2 min audio clip then you are probably best left with recording it directly with your sound card if it supports it or recording it from your speakers. Most of the options out there, and there are a LOT of ways of doing this as I mentioned, assume that you are ripping an entire track or all the audio from the sic. Then you would need to open the sound file in an editor and "crop" it down to the portion you want.

Your PC should be able to do this natively. Use a free audio editing package like Audacity. Set it to record from your DVD drive. Play the disc, record the segment, save, done.

I believe this will depend on the OS the OP is using. Should be possible in Windows 7 I think. Otherwise it might depend on the sound card's features as I mentioned above.

Can you rip the DVD, then use MeGUI or something similar to demux it? Then you'll have an audio stream saved to a file (mp2?) that you can edit and reencode.

It's nifty and most importantly free, I use it to record stuff from electric piano. And it can be used in x86/mac/linux.

If all else fails you can use line in from the audio source (that's what I use for the piano)

When I did it a few times, I ripped the vob using dvd shrink. Demuxed it with virtualdub, and then cut out what I didn't need from the sound file and reencoded it as MP3 with audacity.

Sounds difficult and complicated, but it's really not.
