Just installed winxp pro 3 months ago, but now seems everything is too slow.
I want to reinstall windows xp to get it working again.

I have so many applications, such as photoshop, office ... installed.

and many tuned registries too..

What is the easiest way or the convenient way to make a fresh windows installation.
should i just rename "c:\windows, program file" to a different name and then start installing? i read people doing this, but what does it do?

I can't format my drive.. and i only have around 2.0G left on the drive(C🙂 which i want to install..

Some people talked about imaging, but i don't understand how's it work...

Thanks

I would say it would be best to re-install completely. Just wipe the old out and dump it all. What do you have that can't be put to DVD or CD? The apps can all just be re-installed.

If all you have is 2GB on c, that could be your problem. You generally should never go below 20% of your drive, since Windows uses it for the paging file, which if there is not enough space, can severely impact performance. The other processes you listed would probably just cause you more headaches than the sluggishness.

I think that points to your problems. I am of the following that believes you should leave the registry alone, unless you have a vers specific bug with instructions to fix it from MS. I don't do reg cleaners, reg hacks, or anything like that.

Also (not saying you are) make sure you use genuine applications. There may be some unsavory add ons from software "backups" acquired from "questionable" sources.

I was thinking the exact same thing. Nothing seems to slow down a system like a "tuned" registry and warez.

Don't mess with the registry and try using OSS programs as opposed to warez (if that is what you got), such as OpenOffice instead of MS Office or The GIMP instead of Photoshop. As far as reinstalling Windows it sounds like the best thing for you is to backup your documents only, then completely wipe and format your drive before doing a reinstall.

edit: Come to think of it, even if you have paid for and legit versions of those programs, I would use the OSS equivalents anyway. (I purchased MS Office 2003 for home and I have it available at work, but I tried OpenOffice and use it now instead.)

Stay away from registry tuning and stuff like that.
A while ago I used to play with all kinds of tweaks that ended up corrupting the windows installation and I would have to reinstall quite often.

Other than start up items removal, everything remains at default settings now days!

It's good to use a quality disc degrag program (either Executive Diskeeper 9 or 10, or Raxco Perfect Disc), but when you are down to 2Gb free space, I'm not sure if a disc defrag program will even run. I'd bet money part of the reason yoour machine is slowed down is lack of free disc space. Get a new data stroage drive. Have the two drives in your computer. Install the OS on one drive. Store your data on the other drive. That way, you can easily re-install the OS at any time, and your data files will remain untouched on the second drive.

As for imaging, basically once you have re-installed your OS, and installed your programs and set up your drivers, etc. just the way you like it, you can "image" the OS drive (using Norton Ghost, Paragon Drive Backup, or Acronis). Whenever the system gets fubarred with too much junk, you can just copy your original OS image back onto the drive and everything will be nicely set up for you again.

Change to a bigger harddrive. When harddrive capacity is more than 50%, one will notice slowdown, which increases in proportion to amount stored.
Do yourself a favor and checkout eBay for a 120GB/200GB HDD. Your choice. eBay
