I want to propagate my seed!

I have some bare spots in my grass and i want fill them in with my grass seed whats the best time of the year to do this? techniques? Just throw my seed all over and see if it sprouts or should i plow the area first and then unload seed to that area? I want a full bushy lawn !

we always did it in extreme late winter and just spread it out and covered it with hay... as the hay decayes it gives nutrients to the grass and protects it... also im pretty shure you can plant grass anytime its not that picky... it is grass... well except for snow i dont think it likes that...

Fall is the best time to seed followed by spring as the second best time.
