First you'll need to figure out some way to come down with a mental illness. Lot and lots of drugs couldn't hurt. Also you'll probably want to cut off one of your ears. Mailing it to a friend is your option, but if you decide to go that route I would use Fedex so you get a tracking number. I mean, you only get two shots at this so you don't want to mess this one up. Check yourself into an assylum of your choice, blow your brains out while there, and when all is said and done maybe you can be the next van Gough.

...dont forget to live your life in poverty, and only become famous years after you are dead

Van Gogh used oils and lots of it. That's an expensive way to paint, then as well as now.

I would suggest using Acrylics with a textured gesso mixed in.

I was an art student :)

yeah he was famous for cutting his ear, but it really came from eating paint...those cadmiums are dangerous...really f*ck up the mind. I haven't priced canvas lately, but they are easy to make... lot of beginners use masonite for their canvas.

good call. oil is expensive. start with a local at class and go from there. they usually will tell you all your optoins and where to start.
Personally, i would get some acrylic or water colors in tubes. watercolor is really great if you dont dilute it very much. If you go to your local craft store, you can get pretty cheap, but good canvas' and brushes.

Good luck, and when you get started, i wanna see your work!

didn't see that you asked for brush and canvas as well.

Here's a good idea, Stretched canvas is expensive.
Go to a resale shop and buy a painting on canvas for under 5 bucks, then paint over it.
Brushes come in all shapes sizes and level of expense. Use natural fibers, (pig, camel, sable) for oil. You can use synthetic fiber brushes for Acrylic. Don't spend over $25 on brushes, and try to get a variety of sizes and shapes. Go to a large Artist Supply store, you can spend hours (and hundreds of dollars) in one.

Buy Duo paint, from Holbein. It has the characteristics of oil paint, but is water soluble. It mixes with oil paint too. You will thank me when you don't have to scrub your clothes with turpentine. Duo seems to be unpopular, so it will be difficult to find in stores, but it's amazing stuff.

I painted this with Duo.
