The wife and I have been thinking and talking about starting our own business. We're both tired of working for other people, and if we can come up with something good we may take the plunge.

We live near a decent sized college town (Johnson City, TN - population ~60,000). Instead of starting from the ground floor and creating our own business, I think I would like to start a small franchise store, fast food or whatnot. Specifically, I think a Boston Market would do well in our area, and I don't think there are any others within a 2 hour radius. I would love to start something like a PlayUSA or a Dave & Buster's, but I don't think I'll ever have that type of capital that a larger place like that requires.

Has anyone else done something like this? What is everyone's opinion on Boston Market? It seems like I used to like them when I lived in Atlanta.

Got 500,000 bucks for the franchise fee?

EDIT: FYI No franchise opportunities right now.

They had a boston market near where I live in Virginia, they put it in a crowded mall and it still went out of business.

So they suck? I used to like eating there in the late 90's.

Dunno, I ate there once, it was ok, nothing special. I do eat their TV dinners on occasion. Actually the TV dinners taste a lot like the restaurant and are cheaper.

Same here, we had a few out here in the valley. Decent population, but also lots of competition. All 3 went out of buisness within a year or two.

I live near a Boston Market and it's always dead. I would invest in a Starbucks or something more trendy. I knew someone who owned around 5 franchises. They were very well off as a result.

I can tell you it will not be cheap.
Franchise fee
Building construction
Equipment and Inventory
Employee Training
Cash in bank until it business get going

My guess is that you would need 750k or better to get rolling in that business.

TN franchise rights for Boston Market were sold a long time ago. Subways are cheap to aquire and open. Might want to try and get one of those and then keep adding after a year or two.

You also get to be a Police Department District Sub-Station, protection comes with the territory,
but you loose a couple hundred in proffit with the perks.

Or, open up a Tennesee Legacy Business - got copper tubing & corn ?

About 5 new Dunkin Donuts/baskin robbins have open up around my area, all within one year. Good business.
