you bought one of the highest end board geared to overclocking.

And you just want a slight overclock?

Can you tell me who recomended you the board so i can ban him?

:p

Anyhow, you should read the stickies on overclocking first b4 you try anything. Also you should get familar with that cmos reset incase your system does not boot.

Once you get those down, tell us what you think you should do, and we'll tell you if its right or wrong.

We cant just tell you what to do, because if you ever forget, you wont know how to get back. And that can be a problem.

LOL:D

i just want to get a small OC because OC'ing makes me wary or frying stuff and besides its hot enough where i live anyway, the less heat the better:D

maybe the 1:1 cpu/ram ratio but i need to find that setting in the BIOS if that makes sense

ahh i see..

well we would love to help.

but you need to help us dig the hole your digging. Can't have us come with a cat truck and plow you the hole now can we? :D

Yes your a little correct. You need to slightly bump the fsb, and set ram to 1:1.

Did you consider getting an aftermarket sink? The cooler you run your cpu, the longer it will last. And with an aftermarket sink, if you keep your voltage conservative, it would still outlast you b4 you upgraded.

We have a great case and cooling section. I should know im the mod there. :p you should go in there and ask for cooling advice.

Replacing the stock sink is not as difficult as you may think.

I would aim for 3.2ghz. Since 3.2 is a very nice number at 400 x 8

to be honest on that board, 3.2 would be like a light jog for it. :p You really did buy one of the highest end board geared for pure and massive overclocking.

yes i have aftermarket cooling, a tuniq tower 120 that BARELY fit in the case.

see thats the thing, i didnt see anywhere in the BIOS about setting the cpu/ram ratio to 1:1.

the multiplier also says 333x9, am i changing this to 400x9 to get a OC?

you do that and you get 3.6!

the way you tell mhz is fsb = 333 or 400 multiplied by the multiplier, ie, 9.

So you want a slight overclock, thats 400 x 8 = 3.2

You can try 3.6 however you may need to tweek voltages a little.

Also did you find out where your cmos reset is? Remember thats very important. If your system does not boot up, you need to reset your cmos and start all over again.

yeah i'm familiar with resetting the CMOS

so if i understand correctly i lower the multiplier to 8 (instead of 9 where its at) and raise the FSB from 333 to 400 and that will give me 3.2?

i really dont want to tweak the voltages thats why i just wanted a little OC, numbers like we're talking about

Something ain't right:confused:

Q9450 333x8=2.66ghz (can't raise the multi higher than 8)

There isn't a quad currently available that runs 333x9=3ghz, that would be the Q9650 and it hasn't been released yet (Aigo has a Q9650 Engineering sample)

Post a CPU-z screenshot so we can see what you have

ROFL...

i totally missed that.. Good eye Guitar.

i was assuming he had a Q6600. ROFL!

your multi should be 8. Not 9.

So all you should require is 400fsb for 3.2

and maybe bump your voltage up 1 or 2 from where its at stock.

So around 1.275V <--- still very low voltage, and wont harm anything.

ACK i think gigabyte does vcore differently, More like +mV.

So you want to add 2 option sets to that +mv.

Hey, even some of the best can make mistakes.....:)

My Q9450 has a VID of 1.2500v and when I clocked it to 8 x 400= 3.2, I didn't have to change the voltage at all. I got it to 3.3 with the same results but after that, a small bump to 1.2675v to get to current clock speed. The only thing I changed was the ram timings to manual of 5-5-5-15, changed my ram voltage to manual and set it to 1.9v (default), and thats it. So, "op" you should'nt have any difficulties getting your gear up to speed @ 3.2. With That Tuniq, no problems keeping it cool. ;)

wow i feel like an idiot

my bad it is an 8 multi

ok i dont have anywhere to host the pic but it does say
Intel core 2 quad CPU Q9540@2.66GHZ

my core speed is 2000mhz <-----(isnt this supposed to be 2.66GHZ here?)

multiplier is x6.0 <-----(I thought this was initially supposed to be 8)

bus speed 333.3mhz

rated FSB 1333.3

RAM timings: DRAM frequency 400.0mhz
FSB:DRAM 5.6

cas latency 5-5-5-18 timings (on the ram it does say 4-4-4-12)
command rate 2T
