galveston is the nastiest "beach" i have ever been to

but if dirty water and tar balls are your thing, go right ahead
(its cheap cuz it sucks ) further down the tx coast is not bad though

depends where in so. fl.....i am in boca raton, FL. rent is $850 for a 1/1.5 condo, about 15 minutes from the beach. Not the nicest neighbordhood, but pretty decent.

South Florida != All of Florida.

Have lived in a number of different areas of Florida (along the east coast, the panhandle, etc), and have a number of family members that live in a number of additional places. On average, housing in Florida is relatively inexpensive.

All states have their prime locations. The options for living near a beach in state of Florida are nearly limitless.

Pacific Palisades, Carmel, Laguna Niguel just to name a few. Come to Cali. Beachfront property is dirt cheap.
