I want to leave Norton Systemworks

So, here's the deal.
I'm a long time user of Norton SystemWorks, but I find the AV to be lagging behind some of the competition, especiallt because it is a major resource hog. My problem is that I feel I'll miss some of the features on Norton Utilities, such as the "One Button Check Up" and some other little things. The maintenance capabilities of that program are great. It cleans up the registry, replaces changed references to moved files, and many other things...

That is the major reason I have been keeping the antivirus. It is a software bundle that does what is supposed to do and I think it does it pretty well. Are there any other alternatives? I've been using this for so long that I'm kind of off the hook when it comes to system maintenance software.

I'd prefer a do it all kind of program that does what Norton Utilities does, as good or better. If that's not possible, then a few programs that work together for that same role would maybe be ok.

Thanks in advance.

AVG antivirus @ www.grisoft.com for your antivirus. The latest is nice. I use an old version of jv16 for cleaning the registry, altho the available version now is no longer free.

Uninstalling Systemworks for me was like getting a computer upgrade...I had no idea how much it was bogging things down.

I left Norton too, I have found a few things to replace it though. System mechanic 5 is a great utilities suite. The professional version comes with AV and firewall but I havent tested those.

Aceutilites is another ustilty suite I likes (do a google).

Kerio for a firewall.

ups... sorry for the repeat post.. I found the 2003 one, but since it was already one year old I didn't even think it was worth reading... a lot as happened since. I missed the other one though... :s
I'll try to be more carefull in the future and master the exquisite intricacies of the search button :p

You can uninstall the useless parts of SystemWorks and just keep the few useful utilities. I keep the WinDoctor, and also the system monitoring utility.

The best disk defragger for Win Xp is Diskeeper (version 9 I think is the latest). It is a zillion times faster than the Norton defragger, and it has a smart scheduling feature which looks after defragging automatically.

I think the best antivirus program is NOD32, it tests better than all of the big brand products like norton, mcaffee (catches more viri, in the tests that have been done, supposedly) and the scans of an entire disk are somehow much much faster. It scans your hard drive in 3 minutes. It isn't as bloated either, it doesn't slow your system down, and doesn't take a zillion years for the interface to load like the norton a/v.

I have jumped off of the Symantec band wagon myself. I have started using DiskKeeper for defrag, Kaspersky Anti-virus pro, RegHance and Ad-Aware SE Professional. As for a FireWall I have a Router with firewall capabilities.

If anyone has any different ideas let me know as I am always up for new software.

I like diskkeeper, too. Much better than the Norton Speed disc utilitiy in SystemWorks, which isn't speedy at all on win XP installs. I used Kaspersky a/v pro for a while, quite liked it, much better than norton a/v altho the interface isns't as pretty, it's much quicker. I've switched to NOD32 about 6 months ago, it's better than Kaspersky in my opinion. Seems to be quicker.

I prefer spybot search & destroy to adaware.

what is reghance?
