You can rent decent pianos for as low as $20 a month. A lot of piano rental places also deliver for free and even move it for free when you move.

You could look at getting a keyboard (as in, a piano keyboard), which in a way may be better as you can do all sorts of effects and stuff too, but it can also act as a plain piano.

You can often find pianos to practice on at a university, or maybe a church

Don't get a keyboard. Rent a real piano, or buy one. Check craigslist, the newspaper and any other places where people might be selling a used piano. I got an upright baldwin for only $600 once.

I think getting a cheap keyboard is a good idea. He should try it out for a bit to see if it's really something he will like before he invests in something expensive or a long term contract.

If you live in an apartment/duplex/etc... plz, get a keyboard with some headphones. You could get something like the Kawai MP8 which looks/feels/sounds like a real piano without all the downsides. Yes nothing beats a real piano but good keyboards are pretty good.
