I have been dating a Korean girl for about 4 months.

Her parents only speak Korean, and I would like to start to learn a little to impress them and to possibly forge a realtionship with them as well.

I have studied languages in the past via school, but never on my own.

Should I try those audio tapes ?

1. Travel to Korea
2. Commit a crime in Korea
3. Get thrown into a Korean Prison

I guarantee there is no better way.

a awesome way to learn is to download their music, or try to play an online game w/ korean support (like starcraft w/ korean unicode text on...lotsa koreans on bnet last time i chked i think i donno anymore :( )...do a google search on "soriboda"..it's korean's version of "napster," but korea has no RIAA..

what's your ethnic background?

have her teach you?

when you see her parents go "ahn young ha sae yo (how are you? in a very formal way)" and bow about at a 45 deg. angle and smile. When you leave their house, go "ahn young hee gae sae yo (have a nice stay)." When they visit and later they leave from your home say "ahn young hee gah sae yo(have a nice leave)"

yay you learned 3 korean greetings..oh yeah and make sure you bow when you say them...and make sure you gf teaches you how to pronounce them correctly, or you can ask her parents....they'll appreciate your effort.

..i'll come back w/ more or you can pm me if you wanna know more basic greetings and stuff.

North or South Korean?

If its North, weapons grade plutonium would be a great way to get in with the parents. More impressive than learning their language

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHA HA Hah.... hah... ha.... erm

Take your ignorant backwoods ass elsewhere, we don't need any more bigots here. North Koreans are the same as South Koreans, they just happen to live under a totalitarian government. You just had a laugh at the expense of a whole bunch of people who have been brutalized in every way imaginable. Congratulations.

First I would suggest learning the korean alphabet. It's very short and fairly simple. Once memorized you'll be able to read and pronounce mostly everything. (Lots of the korean stuff in the US is just English phonetically translated.)

Then the rest is just practice and memorization. You won't get anything from the music by just listening, though maybe from watching a bunch of k-dramas. :p
