I want to learn Japanese

I have always wanted to learn Japanese. I am thinking of getting software to help me learn. Anyone have suggestions for good software to do this? I also plan to start renting Japanese movies off of Netflix (on top of the large amount of anime I already watch). I want to be able to speak a decent amount so that I can go to Japan next summer.

learning by self studies is doable, but requires more discipline.

I have a full time job so I don't know where I could take Japense classes at night, I'll look into it. I would actually take a job in Japan and live there for a few years if I could.

i took japanese at the city college in 10th grade, confusing as hell.

if you want to get a grasp your gonna have to live over there for a couple months, that about the only way i see someone really learning japanese.

Either take classes, go to japan, live in a house with only japanese speaking people, stop talking english and start learning japanese and answer everyone in japanese *even if bad pronounciation* just learn the basics etc.

lol, i remember reading that while i was taking a Japanese course. of course, i remember nothing from the class.....

Don't want to put down your love for Japanese, but you can't teach yourself Japanese with any kind of software, I don't care what the box says. Even books. Especially watching anime. Just not gonna happen. The only way to become anything close to decent in the language is to use it daily with fluent speakers who are able to correct and teach you. And I do have experience behind this statement.

I'll be starting my 4th year as a Japanese major at the University of Pittsburgh and will be going to school in Kobe, Japan for the entire school year. I've spent the last three years practicing (speaking out loud) conversations for 3+ hours a day for homework, then having class where no English is allowed for another 2 hours a day. Constant practice and review of correct pronunciation and the rules is the only way the language will sink in. So either take classes or don't even bother.

Also, watching a lot of anime and movies is not even an arguement. It will not help. 100% of the kids I've known who took Japanese so they could understand anime have dropped out within a year. It's not easy, and learning it correctly on your own is impossible.

Even for a native speaker speaking formally is hard. I haven't really used keigo in the last couple of years since I haven't been to Japan too much and now it sounds like horrible, like a child speaking.

Rosetta Stone makes the best software for learning languages. Beware, Japanese will be very hard. I spent four years suffering learning it, then decided to switch to German. 😀

yeah, let's do what the koreans did. let's have japan invade/takeover our country and then try to eliminate our culture and language by imposing japanese as the official language. oh yeah, let's have japan take the women and make them into sex slaves as well.
