I know pretty much nothing on the subject, but I'd like to learn. Namely, how languages arose, how language affects thought, how different languages developed and how they are related etc.

Anyone know a good book? Something that's easy enough for a begginer, but that's not too simplistic. Something like "A Brief History of Time" for languages...
 
great thread, I wonder about this kind of stuff all the time

I often wonder which are the primary languages before the multiple dialects sprang up
