I want to knit a scarf.

I have never knitted before, but I would like to know how. What I want to knit is a scarf with two colors and tasselss on the ends. I would like it to be around 1 foot wide and eight feet long. This is probably too big of a project to do at first, but I am willing to do some smaller ones first to get the hang of it. What I read on a knitting website was that the circular needles are needed for bigger projects such as this. Can I get away with regular needles, or would I need the circular ones for this project? Also can someone recommend me a book (preferably inexpensive) to get started?
