I want to join TeamAnandtech...tell me more, please

Well, I have three boxes running...I might as well devote one of them to something useful.

A few questions:

1. What are we producing these numbers for? Just for grins and giggles?
2. I don't want to support any kind of "overthrow the government" movement or communists
3. Is the program spyware? I don't want some proggy running INSIDE my network that has to constantly "call home" to report it's stats; if it can "call out" someone else can "call in" That ain't happening. :|

Educate me.

Hello MichaelD,

I can tell you about Folding @ Home

1. What are we producing these numbers for? Just for grins and giggles?
Folding @ Home simulates proteins forming. The research is to find cures for Alzheimers Disease, Parkinsons Disease, ALS, and other diseases.

2. I don't want to support any kind of "overthrow the government" movement or communists
We are contributing our unused computer cycles to the benifit of all mankind. It is like volunteering for or giving to a charity. It makes you feel like you've contributed in some small way. And besides it's fun! 🙂

3. Is the program spyware? I don't want some proggy running INSIDE my network that has to constantly "call home" to report it's stats; if it can "call out" someone else can "call in" That ain't happening.
I hear ya here. I have the Folding @ Home client set to ask before connecting to the network. Although I don't think I would have to worry with how the client program works and my firewall.

Thanks, GLeeM (like the toothpaste? 😀)

I like the cause very much. My father is dying from both Parkinson's and Alzheimers. I wouldn't kid about something like that. 🙁 He's been a vegetable for many years now. 🙁

Anyway, enough of that crap.

When the client connects, all it does it dump off results, right?

If I can just clear up my security concerns, I'm in. 🙂

I am actively participating in the DPAD distributed computing effort. Distributed Particle Accelerator Design. It is a science project, pure and simple, that is improving the design of an actual particle accelerator in Great Britain. The high energy protons in the device hit a tantalum rod, the rod generates Pions, they decay into Muons and then into Neutrinos. The final purpose is to send neutrinos through the earth and try to measure the mass (if they have any) of neutrinos.

http://www.stephenbrooks.org/muon1/

If they have mass, then it may explain "dark matter" and will tell us that the universe will eventually stop expanding and then contract back to its original Big Bang configuration. If they have no mass, then the universe is most likely to continue expanding forever.

I won't be around to see it in either case. Of course, if you've read Poul Anderson's book, "Tau Zero" you may have another opinion.

Yes, most distributed computing projects we do have been obsessively tested for security concerns as some members run machines at their jobs that cannot be comprised at any cost, so people have done a lot of security testing for spyware and the like with tthem.

OK, that's great. But I would like a clear explanation of the programs' "reporting routine" and how it works. I have pretty much all ports closed except for the ones I need to function. I'll join, but I want to know how this thing works first.

MichaelD,
Sorry to hear about your father 🙁 This is why a lot of us do this thing.

GLeeM: middle name between initials 🙂 it works for me

The client doesn't send stats. It gets a WU from the Stanford (Folding @ Home) server, does the work as an idle process, and then sends the results back to Stanford. The ports used are 80 and 8080.

I saw a thread on your security concerns at the folding-community.org forum: http://forum.folding-community.org/index.php
They know more and would be able to answer any questions you have.

Thanks

Thanks much; that answers many quesitons. 80 is the standard HTML port. 8080 is often used for a secure HTML connection.

I've no probs with that. Where do I get the client/sign up/how to get started/idiot proof instructions for me?

Lifemapper is an awesome project with a great TeAm and fun TeAmMates! 😉 We're going srong, but need more members to make it to the top! 😀

"Lifemapper analyzes the data, computes the ecological profile of each species, maps where the species has been found and predicts where each species could potentially live."

Plz ask if you've got any questions 😉

Um, I really just want to do the Folding at Home that benefits Parkinsons's research. Can someone please give me directions on where to get the client, etc? 🙂

Oh, and what team number do I put down? What's Anandtech's Team #?

Check out this thread, I'm not too familiar with F@H but hopefully you will have enough info to get started 🙂

Thanks Yo_Ma_Ma for the help 🙂

MichaelD,
Sorry couldn't get here sooner, was at work.

The Info link in my sig gives a lot of info and other links.
The TeAm AnandTech number in Folding @ Home is 198.
The Folding @ Home link will bring you to the F @ H main page. You will find a download link there. Your choices are the GUI or the CLI Console. The GUI can be easier and all that has to show is an icon in the systray (down by the clock). The console can be started from a command window or with a shortcut. With the shortcut you can add the flags to the target box of the shortcut properties. After the quote mark or after the .exe of the path, add a space and then the flag or flags like this: -local -forcesse -verbosity 9. The first time you run it, it will help you configure it. You can minimize the console to the taskbar so it will show there. It can also be run as a service, I guess. I should try it some day just so I know how it works. 🙂

If you have any questions, please ask. Also look for Hyperfocals stat page every day here in this forum 🙂

Like Gleem said F@H is a great cause. I've been running it for a few years now although I used to fold for another team (which shall remain nameless) before I switched over to TA.

BTW thanks for that link in your sig. It helped me rip my VR CD!!

Michaeld, I have my new opteron dually running 24/7 and my Athlon64, and my other 3 3200+ Athlons running folding@home (I dedicate my useage to your dad. My dad is recovering from open heart surgery and will still be in the hospital until futher notice) Maybe I should call you.....

Thanks guys, I appreciate the support. This is a worthy cause.

While I think I may believe in aliens...I really don't feel like using my CPUs and electricity to find them, you know? 😉 But that's MHO. No flaming intended...just friendly ribbing.

I'm not much of a command line guy...I'll stick w/the little GUI app for now.

Don't know how much of a diff my little P3-731MHz box will make, but any additions is still an addition, right? Thanks for the help.

I'll post back here once i'm up and runnign w/it.

Don't know how much of a diff my little P3-731MHz box will make

If you run this box 24/7 my guess is it would get ~35 points per day. My P3-1000 gets about 50 ppd. These boxes are the foot soldiers of our little army 🙂 Some of the bigger point WUs can take 4+ days to finish.

The GUI will get you the same production as the console if you don't leave the animation window open, the animation will cut into your production. I think some screen savers will hurt also.

Welcome to the TeAm!

🙂

Well, I'm up and running!

User name: MichaelDDD (MichaelD was taken :|)
Team: 198 Anandtech

So far, so good. 🙂

Cool. I'm at 1% done and it only took 5 minutes!! 😀 At this rate, I should be done w/this WU....by Christmas. 😉

BTW, how do you run this on more than one box? Specifically, do I have to register w/a new Username for every box I put the client on, or does the Mother Server know to give my different boxes different work to do and tie it all in to my one Username?

Use the same username and TeAm ID when installing on another machine. The Stanford servers will issue a new machine ID, unique to that machine, but you will get the credits for the work that machine does.
Glad to have ya aboard!

Thanks much.

You guys will be glad to know that I remembered I had my old NF2 rig sitting around. Why I thought I only had the P3 is beyond me. 😱

I'm loading up the OS now. 2.0GHz is a whole lot better than 731MHz, no ? 😀
