Actually if your PSU is working with 2x248 you will likely be fine with 2x285's.

I just recently went from 2x246 to 2x275. my PSU is only a 450watt running 6 drive scsi array a dvd drive and a sata drive as well as 6 gigs of ram and a scsi card. No issues at all for me.

Here is the numbers from AMD
248
1.5v@56.5A
89W TDP

285
1.35v@70.5A
95W TDP

If you enable cool n' quiet then you might actually see reduced power usage. Also keep in mind you can get the 8xx series processors and use those. I usually see the 8xx on ebay cheaper than the 2xx but not on the high end as the x85 is pretty much the end of the line for socket 940.

Thanks,
Will

well, that the problem. I can't run @ 100% load for more than 15 minutes, and it reboots, so I'm pretty sure its the PSU. With one core, it runs forever. It used to be 100% forever with any load. I think the PSU is giving out.

it could be a heat problem too, assuming they are not overclocked. If it is getting hot then you machine will (A) windows will crash and automatically reboot unless you uncheck this in the advance system propteries or (B) your bios will shut down you machine if you have such a feature.

But if you really think it is your PSU, i have an FSP Blue 500W and i have to say i like it until i get 100% load where the fan is a louder than anything in my system, i keep a quiet system in a quiet apartment so you have to take that into account.

Yeah, that's too much for a 550 watt Antec. Since you've got a server motherboard, why not get a server psu, for less money than that Fortron? Here's the link: Enhance ENS-0565. Of course, you don't really need that big of an Enhance psu, but it'll be able to power your next server, too.

Well, its not heat. Not overclocked, and Tyan system monitor says 50c. I have xp90's on them. It used to work, I think I just overworked the 550.

OK, Question, would 4.44 v on the 5 volt rail, and 11.84 on the 12v rail cause the system to re-boot constantly ? I have windows 2000 installed. This is why I think my PSU is crap, and has died....

Isn't 4.44v on the 5v rail really low ? Would that alone do it ?

4.44V on 5V is really low. You'd want at least 4.70V. Interestingly, contrast to the ever-increasing focus on 12V rails, I see more and more problems (mostly motherboard related) with 5V rails with today's PSUs.

Dual 290s.. When did 290 come out? I thought 285 was the top model.
