I want to email status reports from a Buffalo Terastation

The only options on the config page are the address of the mail server and boxes to enter email addresses to receive notification.

There's a note in the manual that the SMTP server must be of open type, and must be in the form of an ip address.

Undeterred I entered the ip address of my ISP's smtp server, my old ISP's smtp server, the default gateway of my router, etc etc, and unsurprisingly nothing works.

So I contacted Buffalo Tech Support who suggested I googled to find a free smtp server. Of course I couldn't find one.

Does anyone have any ideas? Apart from lobbying Buffalo for a firmware update? I have the latest version which is 2 years old. So the lobby won't get very far!

Do not use an IP address Try to put in the SMTP server link address of your ISP (the way you would with Outlook, or similar email program).

Here is an example list of many SMPT server addresses, http://www.cordhosting.com/smtp_settings.php

E.g. id you are Verizon customer put: outgoing.verizon.net

Then enter a destination email address that is not on the same server.

If you do not have one open an email with Hotmail , or google, etc. and send it there.

Thanks

I tried my current ISP and my old ISP, and 2 recipients not on the same server.

Do you think if I go through the list I should eventually find one which will work?

It is hard to know, I have my own domain Hosted with my SMPT server, so I can use it for every where.

Most providers do not let you use their SMPT server unless you are on your original connection with them.

If you have to way software Firewall (or any other application/device that block outgoing Internet traffic) make sure that port 25 is Not blocked.

If I tell you that for every email account I have set up using this ISP, I have to use my ISP's server, would that mean that I can't use any other? If so then it my trawl may well be futile.

I have used other ISPs where I've set it so the outgoing server requires authentication and I've used different login credentials, but the only combination that works with my current ISP is using their outgoing server and that's that, according to them.
