I want to disable deletion of XP Pro folder but still write to it

I have a network drive that is used to pass dozens of files daily to other drives. It is connected to a scanning electron microscope. The image files are saved to the drive and then copied to other drives at my desk, then the files are deleted from the original drive.

I'm now trying to set up a photo database on this drive. I will continue to pass the image files along to other drives but I will also copy them to the catalog on the drive. Since I will still be selecting and deleting many files every day on this drive I'm sure that one day, without thinking, I'll accidentally delete the catalog folder along with the image files.

I know I can make the folder read only so it won't delete but then I won't be able to copy new files to the folder without changing the status, and once again I'm sure I'll forget to again make it read only after adding files, thus setting up the same situation where I might accidentally delete the folder.

So, after this too long explanation, is there a way to make a folder safe from deletion but still writeable?

If you go into the advanced NTFS permissions you can deny Delete (assuming you are using Windows)

In XP you would right-click -> Properties -> Security -> Advanced -> Select the User -> Edit -> Check deny on "Delete" and "Delete Subfolders and files"

I try to avoid deny ACLs. In my experience it's a nightmare trying to document the reasons behind it. On the folder you are sharing, you can apply Modify to "Subfolders and Files only".
