I want to create my own Email address...

so what do I actually need to get my own email address?
I went to godaddy.com, and bought an email address... but I guess I need other things to actually use it.
I now know that I need a domain name, but what about a server? can I use the computer that I am using now? is it even worth it?
In other words, I am an idiot that just wants to create his own email address, do any of you guys have any tips or direct instructions?

thanks

jawsh

You already bought an email address?

or did you mean that you bought a domain name from godaddy?

I use 1and1, there MS home business package with 2 domains for $5 a month

I get 2 domain names and 100gb of web space and a web based control panel that I can create email accounts with (up to 1000)

Ive had them for a few years and the uptime is great, storage/web space is very fast and no problems with my email as well.
Im sure godaddy has similar packages

thanks, ya I canceled that godaddy order, prolly aint going to get a refund but oh well. I am going to check out 1and1. again, thanks

Assuming you want your OWN domain name (i.e. @myspecialdomain.com), you need two things:

1) First, register a domain name with a registrar. Godaddy.com charges about ten dollars a year for this service. You can have any domain name you want, as long as nobody else "owns" it.

2) Second, find a company to host your email account(s). This can cost as little as ten dollars a year, depending on how much disk space you want on their server, how many mailboxes you want, the type of mailserver, etc. There are a zillion companies that will host mailboxes for you. You register the domain name and ask them to host your mail.

Once you have a domain name, you can have an "infinite" number of email addresses and mailboxes if you wish (and are willing to pay for them). All will be of the form, "xxxxx@myspecialdomain.com". Typically, you get five or ten separate email addresses and mailboxes with a hosted email account.

Running your own email server is a bit complex and not something you need or want to do just to have a few custom mailboxes.

Unless you're a geek and like to get into stuff like that 😛

Thanks for the replies, yes I am a geek... just not a very smart one I guess.
I am going to look around the web and learn the ways of email, then I will make a decision.
I am pretty happy so far with godaddy, I was able to cancel my order, and I got a full refund... all in a 12 hour span, that is pretty good in my book, I am prolly going to stay with them because they seem customer oriented. but who knows...

again, thanks for the replies

Joshua

**EDIT**
This is what I have found at godaddy, I think it is all I need buit I am not sure:
? 5 GB Space ? 250 GB Transfer
? 500 Email Accounts ? FREE! Software
? 10 MySQL Databases ? 50 Email Forwards
? Forums, Blogging, Photo Galleries ? No ads
and I got a domain name also, This is all I should need right?
The hosting plan is only for 2 months, that should give me enough time to decide if I want to commit to anything.

Setting up a mail server is a pain that I couldn't find any resources on. I eventually went with gmail for the time being.
