i guess i want to make it easy, easier than swapping cases and cables. So..., will just plugging in a ethernet cable from one to the other suffice. If so, can a operating system be
install on the subordinant box? thanks.

Assuming that both computers have Network Cards.

If at least one card is giga then any CAT5e/6 would od, otherwise you need a crossover cable.

Plug the cable to the two computers (Network card to Network Card) and configure File Sharing on both.

Make sure that the Software Firewall on each computer allows free local traffic. If you use 3rd party Firewall On, Vista/XP Native Firewall should be Off, and the active Firewall has to adjusted to your Network IP numbers on what is some time called the Trusted Zone (consult your 3rd Party Firewall instructions.

Not always true. I have used 10/100 NICs with a patch cable before. However, it is more likely that GbE cards will support the automatic crossover.
