I loved DriveSpace that came with Dos/Windows. I was able to compress my entire parition with all the text, exe, dll, wav and other highly-compressible files on it, and the OS would be able to use them "transparently".

Is there such a tool for Windows ME/98? I definitely don't want to use Zip or anything like that. It needs to be some form of "transparent" compression... I remember Free Space, but it's no longer available...

I think drivespace only worked with FAT16 partitions, and it was horrible at that even. Install 2K or XP and use NTFS compression, it's a lot less painful.

Right! But, the least painful solution is to just get a larger HDD and don't worry about space.

Yeah, but this is for a laptop, and 20 GB is $90 ;) Besides, some larger HDs are VERY loud. And really, is getting a bigger HD a solution? It's like getting more RAM and a faster CPU just because some software developers feel like creating bloated and slow software. Say NO to Microsoft! :)
