ok, here's what:
i live in a dorm-type accomodation (for now), and i share my bandwidth with everyone there. there's something in the region of 50 apartments in it ..
now, we dont simply "share". the bandwidth is regulated from somewhere else.
i have no access to the router.
yesterday i was fooling around with a bittorrent and i saw the bandw/ jump to about twice what it usually maxes out to, which is around 230Kbs (i know, right?? the dark ages of broadband:eek:).

there's no way i can play Blacklight Retribution with such horribad connection and not suck. And trying to download anything is a nightmare; it took me one hour just to get the latest geforce drivers.

Also, for those who think i'm bad ():) most of the apartments are actually empty, so i wouldn't be depriving anyone of their justly deserved Game Of Thrones torrents.

So, is there any way that i can fool this system to make it give me more bandwidth?
Is there any way i can find out what switch/router is doing the limiting, without physical access?

I know there's *something* limiting me because while the speed is available, as soon as it goes over 230Kbps it caps me, so all i have to do is find out what ...

Since the connection is passing through the router (which you have no access), I am afraid we have limited options. I can only think of proxies.

You are Not Cheating on Your Connection. You are trying to cheat the Dorm (which I doubt that you own) connection.

230kbps is more than enough bandwidth to play the game. The issue is your ping time (latency). If the system doing the connection sharing and limiting adds significant latency to the connection, then there's not much you can do except get your own connection, or beg whoever is in charge to adjust the settings for you (not likely, but can't hurt to ask).

I see two maybe three viable routes for you if you want higher bandwidth.

1. Join the admin group and work your way up (its a dorm, gotta have an admin group of voulanteers that does the lifting), once up, adjust your own account to your desire.

2. Find another source, a nearby wifi, build an directional antenna and poke about. if protected there is still a number of options available to you but shadey.

3. Buy your own connectivity .. 4G broadband is kinda fast and low latency.. totally gameable.

230 Kb/s or 230 KB/s ? (bytes or bits?)

edit: if 230KB/s, then you should be able to play any games fine (assuming you aren't downloading other stuff at the same time). If this isn't the case then I would complain to your local admin and see if there is some way they can't help reduce the latency on your traffic.

if 230Kb/s, well.... that is indeed quite slow....

You on wifi or wired?
