My mom deals with Fidelity -- they have offices nearby AND online presence, so she can trade stocks either in person, or over the net. Very nice.

Datek doesn't have all of the bells and whistles that etrade has but excellent execution and is very fast. All of their orders are $10. I've tried etrade and ameritrade and Datek is the best for speed of execution. Also if a market order takes more than a minute, the commission is free. I think they have a 'no minimum' amount to open an account as well.

$500 minimum but that shouldn't be a problem because if you are planning to invest $500 you are better off just opening a high interest checking account. I would recommend Datek as well.. At $9.99/trade they are not bad at all.

If you're new to the business of investing, a good way to start small and learn the ropes would be to start with buyandhold.com. I've been using their services for a while now, and been very pleased with them

In my opinion, for a new investor, http://www.csfbdirect.com is good for people who don't want to plop down a big capital deposit (e-trade requires like $5000 to open an account, I believe).

A CSFBDirect Account can be opened for free. You can trade, then send in a personal check within 3 days after close of trade. This way you don't have to leave all your $$$ sitting in a brokerage account.

Charles Schwab has the best service and typically among the best ratings from Barrons.... The rates maybe about $5 or a little more per trade... but that should not deter you from using a better service. You would have to pay me $30,000 to switch for a just a year.

I use Scottrade.com. They have a real time ticker, not delayed 15mins like some of the others so you know nearly exactly what you are paying when you place your trade.

At least when I signed up Firstrade had no minimum. Online trades are $6.95. They also have real-time ticker that you can run, although I haven't messed with it.
