I want to buy router (not wireless) for my cable connection and i want it to be able to filter unneded packets.
Also i dont know anything of routers and who manufacture them so if i get top 5 manufacturers and some hints it'll help me.

As far as Wired Router.

The main difference between the Entry level Cable/DSL Routers is the Firewall "Filtering" system, and number, range etc. of ports that can be opened through the Hardware Firewall.

If you are a gamer, and or use applications that need ports opening, it is an issue you have to look at.

If you need special ports opening for Server, VPN, etc. You have each targeted Router to make sure that it can keep these ports Open.

If you want a more elaborate Router with better VPN, and SPI capacities you have to look at the Top Models of SMC, Linksys, and Netgear. Each Brand has a higher level hardware for about $100

Otherwise I would go with the lowest price, and the decor

They go as low as $10 after rebate you have nothing to loose (LOL i think today is the last day for this one): http://www.microcenter.com/sin...html?product_id=151876

I dont know if i need a cable/dsl router or just router because i intend to use it only as hardware firewall and i have single computer so there is no problem if pass-trough vpn traffic will be blocked, it will work for my coputer when i open its ports right?

Who is your cable internet provider? They generally list the hardware that is compatible with their systems online. This should help you in making a decision. So you have a coaxial cable coming from your wall that plugs directly into your computer?

BTW Jack's advice is solid all 3 manufacturers' are very solid.

Thanks,
C

I have had trouble with d-link routers and IP phones. I think linksys is probably your best bet for all around compatibility.

The remark above leads me to a strong suggetion that you would do some reading before you go ahead.

Ignore the prices in the links above, stich to the principles. The same or similar hardware can be found for 60%-90% less.

Log to this page it has a lot of links to instructions to Windows Network Setting and Sharing.

I am from europe and my ISP dont have any info on theyr website no and customer support works really bad. But yeah its coaxial cable that plug dirrectly to my network card.

SMC is a great company who makes great gear , i won't use anything but their equipment for routers, both wired and/or wireless. D-Link and Netgear are 2nd and around equal in my book, and i've never found Linksys stuff to be that great My 2 cents.
