I'm sick of the music stores online that protect the music so that you can only play it on a certain player or only on the pc that you purchased on etc. Players change and break and computers get replaced. I have 3 pc's that I use in different locations.

What is the best place online to buy high quality unprotected mp3 files?

iTunes is offering some music, I think from EMI's catalog, that is DRM-free. There is no online store that offers a wide variety of music in an unprotected format. This is the RIAA, after all.

There are two ways around the protected format. 1) Burn purchased tracks to a CD, in the standard music cd format, and then rip them back to your computer in mp3 format, or 2) buy the physical cd and rip it to your computer.

wow really? I'm surprised people stand for this. If I buy a song I want to play it on all my computers and in all of the available players.

I don't want to have to take a compressed music file that I purchase, convert it to an uncompressed format and then perform another lossy compression on it again just to make it portable. :( I guess piracy is the only way. I'll just buy an album once in a while so I'm not stealing more than they are.
