I want to buy Kingston ram

I want to buy a Kingston 512MB PC-3200 DDR400 SDRAM. But there are two different model numbers: KVR400X64C3/512 and KVR400X64C3A/512.

How are they different? Which one should I get?

I guess the "C3" stands for CAS Latency of 3. However, in my BIOS, if I choose [user define] I can only choose the cas latency between [1.5T] to [2.5T] only. Now if I use the [auto] and let the BIOS sets it for me, will it set at [3T] (because it doesn't seem to have that choice) ?

Is it stable to run it at CAS 2.5 anyways?

Thanks guys.

Dn't know the difference between the two versions. But the C3 does mean latency. And you can try it at 2.5, but it will probably be more stable at 3. The "auto" setting uses the PNP setting from the chip, so it will choose 3.

Did you look into other ram at equivalent price points?

How much is the ram you are buying? And does it matter if u get 2x256 or 1x512? Maybe something better is available at a near price point from Crucial or Geil.

The prices for Kingston, Crucial, Corsair and Geil are about the same. I want 1 stick of 512mb since I'm using a KT600 chipset mobo. It's just hard to understand why Kingston is CS3 while the others valued ram are CS2.5.

I found it. Their spec are identical except for the following.

KVR400X64C3
Clock Cycle Time (tCK)5ns (min.) / 8ns (max.)
Row Cycle Time (tRC)60ns (min.)
Power (IDD0)3.744 W (operating)

KVR400X64C3A
Clock Cycle Time (tCK)5ns (min.) / 10ns (max.)
Row Cycle Time (tRC)55ns (min.)
Power (IDD0)3.224 W (operating)
