I want to buy this game since I have heard of some addon called day of defeat that sounds nice.

I went to some cnet shop called pagecomputer.com
they have 5 different versions of half life

half life game of the year win95/98 =25.60 + shipping
half life counter strike win 95 98= 25.98 + shipping
half life platinum edition win 95/98=44.06 +shipping
half life blue shift 95/98 15.24+ shipping
half life couterstrike condition zero 32.36+shipping

I have two questions

1) Can I get the cheap one "blueshift" and still addon the day of defeat?

2) They all say win 95/98 except counterstrike condition zero. I run win 2000 can I run any of these on win 2000?
thanks

If you have a fast internet connection, Game of the year version is the one you want, all the mods can be downloaded for free. Even if you got the platinum though, most of the mods would require huge downloads to update. I don't believe DOD can run off of a half life counterstrike retail install.

But if you have a fast internet connection, see if you can find a classic halflife in the original box for $12 or so.

Get the Game of the Year edition -- it will give you the basic Half-Life and the ability to play other mods.

Nah, but we'd all have 10K posts here if we all answered questions that have already been answered giving less info than others have already provided.

Since no one tackled that one: Blue Shift is a standalone and can be played by itself (whereas the others, like Opposing Force, DoD, Team Fortress, CS before the retail came out are mods and require Half-life). So I don't think DoD will work with Blue Shift, but it will with Half-life.

A question for the CS'ers out there - is there no training mode available where I can get the feel of it, learn the maps, etc. (I'm a newbie, obviously) before I jump on a server and get royally toasted while trying to get the hang of it? I'm using Half-life with the downloaded mod rather than the retail version of CS.

Just make your own server, you don't even have to have an internet connection--just create a lan game, pick a map and futz around.

Yes they run fine on win2k and XP. Day of Defeat 2.0 is out now and you can download it a number of places. It is a little over 100 megs. Watch out though, it is very addictive.

What changes are there in DOD2? I played the first one, but it really didn't grab ahold of me.

Better maps, snipers abilities were changed, better graphics, and now there are machine gunners. There also seems to be more emphasis on teamplay.

another answer to Thejtrain... in the retail version there IS a training level that teaches you to shoot, to snipe, and to use smoke grenades, etc. However, if you have the mod, you're out of luck... download "RealBot", "AndroidBot" or something that will allow you to make your own server and add in bots so you can play. If you die, you can kill all bots so u can start the next round. :) As an added bonus, you can turn off their shooting so they jus run around and you can get the feel for the game without the danger. :D

Cool, thanks PowerYoga - I just read up on RealBot, and it sounds like exactly what I'm looking for! Sweet...

I found pod bot (ping of death) to be the most human like, well, resembling a good human anyway. Small maps with them, like Estate, are fun for para practice. ;)
