Whats card(s) will give me the best graphics at that resolution with a decent FPS like 70.

there are 2 answers to that question: 1. if you DON'T plan to play crysis, and 2. if you PLAN to play crysis.

for #1, an 8800gs or 3850 256 are the way to go. both can be had for less than 150.

for #2, um, well, sli'd 8800 ultras won't give you good framerates with everything completely maxed out.

I'd shoot for #1 and just compromise a bit if you end up playing crysis. :)

I'd also shoot for 1,Crysis still looks good on medium-high.

thanks so far. I still have a Sapphire Radeon 256Mb 1950XT
http://www.newegg.com/product/...x?Item=N82E16814102067

I like to have alot more superior graphics to that card if i can.

I been away awhile and i remember running 1600x1200 and getting a good FPS like 70 thats all and being really smooth.

Crysis needs SLI? for only 1200? wow

I got the impression that everybody was playing at 1600+ these days.

what are 8800 Ultras? all i see are 8800GTX as the best.

If it doesn't look choppy to me, it's decent enough. Nothing will look choppy unless it's under 21 frames per second. This is the way the human eye works.

Get an 8800GT or a 9600GT if you like Nvidia.

Get a 3850 or a 3870 if your prefer ATI.

any of these can cope with 1280x1024.

:)

That card is FAR from being garbage, only a few games like Crysis,WiC and unoptimized console ports will eat it alive, almost ALL other games will get you 70+FPS with that card @ 12x10.

If you must upgrade trhough and you're playing Crysis, you'll want NO less than a 8800GT 512MB or a OCed HD 3870,preferably more.

right thanks its a fine card i did 6x anti aliasing at that res. it got 16(48 Pixel shader processor) or pipes. i just like more detail and shadows etc.

looking at my budget would these cards be much better than what i got?

512MB EVGA 9600GT, SSC, PCI-E 2.0 (x16), Mem 1950 MHz, GDDR3, GPU 740 MHz, Stream 64
512MB PowerColor HD 3870 PCS PCI-E 2.0, 2400 MHz, GDDR4, GPU 800MHz, 320

is there much benefit getting card with 1gb memory?

i lheard the 3870 is better than the 8800GT and it be cheaper. I like ATI because there not Nvidia. :)

right the 8800GTS is no good the GT is better and the 3870 is better than the 9600 so that leaves it down to 8800GT or 3870 like you said IL2SturmovikPilot :)

Thanks all.

i narrowed it down to these 2 which is better?

1GB Gainward 8800GT Bliss GS, PCI-E 2.0, Mem 1900MHz GDDR3, GPU 650MHz, Streams 112, 2x DL DVI-I
512MB MSI HD3870 PCI-E 2.0 (x16) 2250 MHz GDDR4 GPU 800MHz 320 Streams 2xDual Link DVI-I/HDTV HDCP

the 8800GT is $100 more

WHAT??? You're not an angry hampster, but a blind one! ;) A rts or role-playing game might look ok in the 25-30 fps range, but a fps under 30 isn't very good. Ask bfg10k if there's much of a difference between 40 and 50, too, for that matter.

the 8800GT is $100 more

you can get an OC 8800gt for ~ $190 AR. you can save $10-15 on a 3870. don't buy the OC version of the 3870, they usually cost more and provide no tangible benefit (it's easy as pie to OC via CCC). Check out the hot deals section.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16814127329

that is the OC 8800gt, it's actually $195AR at newegg, you can save $5-10 at another site (ask engineer which one, I keep forgetting to write it down). I have a 3870 and I love it, but that 8800gt will destroy my card. Also, the main reason I bought the 3870 was the dual slot cooling solution would (I assumed) be much quieter and exhaust the hot air out the back of my case. Well, guess what? that OC 8800gt is also dual slot and exhausts the hot air out the back of the case. Plus, with that OC at 660/1900, you'll get 8800gts 512 performance for UNDER $200!!!!! I know you like amd. Heck, I'd buy amd if the price/performance was close. Unfortunately, right now you simply cannot justify in most instances going the amd video card route unless you plan a crossfire or frankenfire setup in the future.

Thats my vote.

yeah, but 9600gt has that sneaky oc thing, PLUS it is still running on newer drivers than ANY OTHER card from nvidia or amd. 9600gt is a decent card that got better press than it deserves.

Are you sure that anything above 21 does not look choppy? When I was playing unreal tournament 3 and using fraps, my framerate was always between 20 and 30 fps, and it was almost unplayable. Bioshock runs at around 40 fps for me and that seems a little choppy.

From other posts I have seen, angry hampster (sweet name), besides on this post people seem to agree with you. Somewhere on this forum I read that xbox games run at 24 fps (which I just don't believe). I just wonder why it doesn't seem to hold true to me. I'm pretty sure I don't have superhuman vision so that can't be it.

EDIT: edited for clarity

thanks for your contributions. i think you made up my mind i get a decent 8800GT 512MB and pay the extra and oc it which maybe come close to a GTX.

it be a waste of money getting sli for a 19" monitor. looking at this hierarchy list http://www.tomshardware.com/20...aphics_card/page6.html it seems my X1950XT is not far from the top and still commendable and i noticed the price has not dropped massively when others ATI models below have tumbled.

30FPS is too low. 40FPS need more. 50FPS is ideal minimum for a smooth great experience.

Looking at this Crysis hardware guide. http://uk.gamespot.com/features/6182806/index.html

It looks like i get about 25FPS at 1200 with my current card.

FWIW I'm still gaming with a 7950GT 512MB. I won't upgrade until video cards are out that will really run Crysis and other yet to be released titles well (well meaning 45-65+ constant FPS on all high settings). In fact I may not upgrade until I see any actual games for the PC worth playing at all.

well thats sensible advice but the kids of today cannot wait. graphics cards are like to gamer geeks as mobile phones are like to kids.

i bought my gfx card in Dec 2006 just amazed to see it still worth using.
