Beretta, but everyone I know who had one in the military says they suck.

They do.

The op should look at the S&W M&P, the XD and if he can get over it not being 9mm, a 1911 variant.

9mm Colt Commander

I've never shot one, though.

A buddy of mine returned from overseas not too long ago, and he agrees - they suck.

you can get a 1911 in 9mm.

I went to a pistol range the other day and rented one. Liked it alot more than the glock and beretta my friends had rented.

1911's are nice, but probably going to cost a shit load more than the others.

Out of curiosity I went looking at prices online afterwards ... I think the 8mm was around 500, which isn't crazy high.

I had always thought 1911's were 1500 min, maybe this is true for the 45ACP gun, but it isn't for the 9mm.

You can get springfield armory mil-spec or GI models in .45 for less than $500, even less if you look at the Taurus PT1911 handguns.

Custom 1911's cost substantially more. Even a very nice Kimber can be had for a lot less than $1500.

Try out a wide variety of handguns before you buy. Until you have a feel for what truly fits you, I don't think you can make a good decision.

I own a S&W M&P Compact 9mm and I love it; however, my roommate swears by the full-size .40. All comes down to preference. I also have a 1911A1 .45 ACP that I love, but that is a little difficult to carry. Different models for different purposes.

Getting a 1911 in 9mm seems like a poor idea to me. If you're willing to carry a 9mm, there are many guns that are far more reliable than a 1911. Sigs, H&Ks, Glocks, etc.

I realize that a lot of people live their lives by the 1911, but I've never had one that I would trust my life to. The ones currently in my safe are a Springfield GI model (cheap, stovepipe-o-matic), a Kimber Ultra CDP II (about $1000, occasional failure to feed), and a Wilson Combat CQB (about $2,800, has experienced one stovepipe.)

I'm not saying that these things jam all the time. On the contrary, the Kimber and Wilson have only jammed a couple times out of a couple thousand rounds of ammo. But when compared to my Sig 226 (over 8,000 rounds without one jam) or my Sig 228 (over 3,000 rounds without one jam) or my H&K USP Compact (over 3,000 rounds without one jam) or any of my other modern auto pistols, the 1911s just don't stack up. They're more fragile, heavier, less reliable and hold less ammunition. Oh, and they're more expensive, generally speaking.

I'm not claiming to be an expert, just went to a pistol range for the first time last friday ... of the guns they had for rent I chose the 1911 in 9mm (we had bought a bunch of 9mm ammo at an academy prior to going to the range to save some cash).

I liked it, I was pretty accurate with it. The glock and beretta that my buddies chose I wasn't as big a fan of. The Beretta jammed a couple times, I don't know if it was poorly maintained or what. The 1911 fit my hands better and I had better aim with it.

Not in the market for a gun, though, just having some fun.
