really great cams. You cannot go wrong with them.

I second this...Not the smallest cameras, but they have 20 shooting modes 5/7 MP, and can add lenses if you want to

i spent a very long amount of time doing research.

i would take a look at canon (sd700is is out (might be too expensive), sd630/sd600, fuji f11, sony t30 and casio s600)

i ultimately decided on the casio because of its size (smallest and lightest), price (274 shipped), and the quality was good (not as great as the canons or fujis) but, for my uses its perfect (i.e. you wouldn't be able to tell much, if any, difference between the different cameras).

trust me. it was very important to have a camera that had good quality and portability; im currently spending my summer in japan and would be extremely upset if the camera failed on either aspect.

I would go with the A700. It fits your wants and your price range. And its a great camera.

SD550 is a good camera; look for it on pricegrabber. also, I would consider the Casio S600. great size, looks great, not too expensive.

I have the 550 and it is a very, very nice camera. I  it, but if I were buying today, I'd look at the SD600 & 700 because of the image stabilization feature, which is very useful.

Edit: it looks like only the SD700 has IS, and it's probably out of your price range. In that case the 550 might be for you.
